History[edit]
Alongside Narhal's Raiders, the Filthy Lucre were hired by the Lyran Commonwealth during the lull between the First and Second Succession Wars. At the start of the Second Succession War in 2830 the Lucre were stationed on the Tamar Pact capital of Tamar. By the end of that brutal conflict the Lucre were stationed on Alexandria.[1]
By the time of the Third Succession War, the Lucre were judged to have performed their duties quite well by House Steiner, spending so much time in the Commonwealth that the unit had established roots in the Lyran realm. Based off this alone, barring the unexpected, outside observers fully expected the Filthy Lucre would be absorbed into the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces.[2]
While ultimately that did not come to pass, as of 3025 the Lucre remained under contract to the Lyran Commonwealth stationed on Bolan.[3] With the unit in debt to the Lyran government, it seemed a foregone conclusion that the Lucre would renew with the Commonwealth when their then-present contract expired in July 3027.[4]
In service to the Lyran Commonwealth for more than two centuries, the mercenaries and their families all settled in Commonwealth space. The majority of their MechWarriors graduated from Lyran academies, including the Nagelring. The birth of the Federated Commonwealth greatly enthused the Lucre.[5] However, relations between the Lucre and the Commonwealth ended in 3050.
When a Free Worlds League mercenary unit, Langendorf Lancers, raided Dixie, where the Lucre was stationed then, they defeated them, forcing them to retreat. The AFFS liaison, Kommandant Mandingo Gluck ordered the Lucre to pursue the raiders through the city, but Major Carpathia refused, instead ordering his men to return to their base. There, Gluck had him arrested for cowardice, together with all his command, and their 'Mechs seized. The ambitious Lyran officer, who apparently had jammed comms to prevent Colonel Timson's orders being heard, tried during a later argument with him to force the group into the AFFC through a Company Store ploy.[5][6]
But Timson refused to comply: as their contract was to end, he evacuated the Lucre's families and the group signed a contract with the Free Worlds League, paying their debt to the Commonwealth. With Timson threatening to use the force to rescue his men, Gluck had to concede. The Lucre departed the planet they were garrisoning, leaving Lyran space... ironically, acompanying their previous enemies, Langedorf's Lancers. As they arrived at their destinations, tensions between the Lucre and the Lancers rose, as the former refused to return the salvage they took at Dixie to the Lancers. As the Lucre's commander requested they not face their former employer, the unit was stationed along the Capellan Confederation border.[5][7]
