The Firgrove system is the location of at least one habitable world, Firgrove V, and as of 3145 was located in the June Operational Area of the Periphery March within the Federated Suns.[2][3]

System Description[edit]

The Firgrove system is located near the Kautokeino and New Syrtis systems[4] and consists of a class F4V primary orbited by at least five planets. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the nadir jump point.[1]

System History[edit]

The Firgrove system was colonized at some point during or shortly before the Age of War.[5][6]

Firgrove V, more commonly known simply as Firgrove, is the fifth planet in the system and has a single moon named An Claí Fada. For much of its history an orbital shipyard has been in place above Firgrove.[1]

Planetary History[edit]

Star League[edit]

During the twenty-eighth century the significance of Firgrove and its shipyards was such that the planet would be home to the Ninth Syrtis Fusiliers for more than fifty years.[38]

Jihad[edit]

In 3072, Firgrove was assaulted by an unknown Word of Blake force that attacked the replacement depot on that world. Firgrove had become the center of the replenishment system in the near Capellan March. Recent Capellan aggression and the still-turbulent fighting in and around the Pleiades worlds has kept normal Department of the Quartermaster operations stymied. Small units representing the Syrtis Fusiliers and the Avalon Hussars were known to be on-world, and small detachments from several mercenary commands, including the Illician Lancers and the Lexington Combat Group were thought to be in en route. The fate of any of these units is unknown, but presumed lost.

A Blakist Level III landed in force and breached the defensive perimeter before targeting the stored matériel and munitions. Initial reports indicate that they ignored the AFFS defenses until after they had destroyed the matériel in question, although no Blakist units were recovered during the salvage operations. Analysis of unit markings observed by the defenders yielded no known Word of Blake unit: the insignia was a Blake broadsword wearing a roaring lion's[39] (later they would be identified as the Forty-sixth Shadow Division).

On 19 June 3080, the Taurian Concordat attempted to strike at the Clyde Shipyards by raiding the Firgrove system with the Quixote-class WarShip TCS Vendetta.[40] A fragment of a news broadcast being recorded by the TNS reporter Joshua MacDermott indicated that the Vendetta had been hit by several explosions within a minute of beginning to maneuver after emerging from the jump point, with the First Officer of the Vendetta, Able Ritcher, indicating that the Vendetta had emerged into—or moved into—a minefield of some kind. In addition to the damage inflicted by the explosions, the footage indicated that the Vendetta was being targeted with capital missiles before retreating from the system.[41]

During the Jihad, the Geenock Flight Academy—a for-profit flight academy based at the Ormond Intercontinental Aeroport—reworked its existing maintenance facilities to allow for limited manufacturing, producing the ancient Vulcan aerospace fighter originally manufactured by the Rim Worlds Republic.[1] In the wake of the Jihad the Clyde Shipyards expanded their production, but as late as mid-3081 were still unable to produce at maximum capacity because of Blakist sabotage.[42]

Geography[edit]

Firgrove is a nearly unique combination of environments. Along the equator it has one continent, Thurles, which is dominated by deserts. The second continent, Ormond, has an ecology based on vast peat bogs.[1]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Tipperary: the planetary capital city, located on Ormond, as were most cities on Firgrove[1]
  • Geenock: site of the Ormond Intercontinental Aeroport and location of the Geenock Flight Academy[1]
