History[edit]

The Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers can trace its origins back to the Age of War or earlier and the private military force raised by House Hasek to defend its mining and drilling concerns on New Syrtis. The Syrtis Fusiliers became the private guard and personal army of the Hasek family, with their star rising alongside that of the Hasek family and New Syrtis; the Syrtis Fusiliers expanded, and as time progressed the brigade became the official guard of New Syrtis and then the perhaps the most important military command within the Capellan March Principality of the Federated Suns.[2]

The Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers and their sister regiment, the Third, were both founded on the same day; the two regiments were led by twin brothers from the Hasek family, with the Fourth being commanded by Jonathan Hasek and the Fourth by Jason Hasek. From the date of their founding to the height of the Star League, the two regiments maintained a tradition of never being posted more than 120 light years apart, and for centuries the two regiments would continue to actively train together.[2]

Davion Civil War[edit]

The bulk of the Syrtis Fusiliers brigade supported Prince David Varnay and his wife Cassandra Davion loyally throughout the Davion Civil War, opposing first the combined forces of Laura Davion and Nikolai Rostov and then First Prince Alexander Davion. At the end of the war Prince Alexander offered an amnesty to the survivors from the brigade, and reintegrated the Syrtis Fusiliers into the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns, the restructured military that replaced the Federated Peacekeeping Forces as the state military of the Federated Suns.[2]

Alexander's clemency towards the Syrtis Fusiliers and his subsequent actions in rebuffing the attempt by Richard Varnay to seize control of the Capellan March cemented the Fusiliers' loyalty to New Avalon and the wider Federated Suns.[2]

The Star League[edit]

The Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers served the Federated Suns well in the two centuries following the Davion Civil War; when the Star League council issued the Council Edict of 2650, sharply limiting the size of the military each Great House was allowed to maintain, the Fourth and her sister regiments were left untouched. The brigade would remain ten regiments strong until shortly after the repeal of the Council Edict of 2650.[2]

Succession Wars[edit]

The Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers began the First Succession War at full strength but by the war's end was down to just under half of its authorized strength.[3] In 2829, during the Second Succession War, the Fourth under the command of Damien Hasek mounted a successful but hard-fought defense of Demeter that left the unit with barely a reinforced battalion's worth of assets.[4] Later they went on to raid St. Ives in 2836, where the Fourth and the Bloody Suns mauled the defenders before departing.[5]

Though the Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers survived the Second Succession War, at some point during the Third Succession War the regiment disappeared from the AFFS' rosters.[6]

Dark Age[edit]

The Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers were rebuilt at some point after 3085 and served during the Victoria War of 3104. During the invasion of Menke the Fourth sustained heavy losses at the hands of the Second and Third McCarron's Armored Cavalry before the Fourth McCarron's Armored Cavalry arrived to finish the virtual destruction of the unit. The few survivors joined the Sixth Ceti Hussars in evading the pursuing Capellan troops in Menke's jungles. At the war's end the Fourth Syrtis Fusiliers were listed as destroyed.[7][8][1]
