Geoff Mercer was a Bloodnamed warrior and the commanding officer of the Second Viper Guards Cluster of Clan Steel Viper's Alpha Galaxy as of 3055.[2]

Star Colonel Geoff was the commanding officer of record for the Second Viper Guards following the Battle of Tukayyid and the acquisition of the Vipers' Inner Sphere occupation zone.[2] By 3061, Geoff retained command of the Second Guards and was stationed in the Inner Sphere system of Blair Atholl.[3][4] Following the Steel Vipers' ejection from the Inner Sphere, Geoff continued to lead the Second Guards and was stationed on Homer in the Clan Homeworlds in 3067.[5]
During the Wars of Reaving, the Steel Vipers' Alpha Galaxy became involved in fighting for the Hellgate system when a Clan Coyote naval fleet prematurely attacked their vessels during a routine recharging stopover in late 3072. Galaxy Commander Kimberly Hoskins' curiosity over the Coyotes' strange behavior lead her to dispatch Geoff's Second Guards to investigate the situation on Hellgate, with it quickly becoming apparent that The Society had taken control over the world. When The Society failed to respond to the Vipers' communication attempts, Geoff lead his warriors in an advance towards Gehenna City. Although no military communications had been detected by the Guards during their initial approach towards the planet, an ambush by Clan Snow Raven bandits resulted in a major rockslide that killed Geoff and buried a third of his troops. In response, Galaxy Commander Hoskins launched a campaign of orbital bombardment that killed all but fifty thousand of Hellgate's populace.[1]
