The Gibraltar system was home to at least one habitable world, Gibraltar I, and as of June 3152 was located in the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey in the Free Worlds League.[3]

Planetary History[edit]

Gibraltar's first colonists were an isolationist group from Europe who settled the world in 2351 despite its unusual day-night cycle.[1]

The Star League[edit]

The planet remained independent until after the Reunification War, when economic woes forced Gibraltar to join the Free Worlds League in 2610 (although interstellar maps at the Star League's founding in 2571 showed Gibraltar as already part of the League). The planetary government promoted itself as a military hub in exchange for revenue, hosting a Free Worlds navy anchorage and the Star League's Ninth Army.[1]

In 2760, pirate forces, possibly supported by the Lyran Commonwealth, attacked the garrison of Star League Defense Force troops on Gibraltar. Severe damage to the barracks and BattleMech facilities reduced operations for the Fifteenth BattleMech Division while reconstruction at Fort Calpe progressed.[36]

Dark Age[edit]

After Tamarind fell to the Lyran Commonwealth during Operation HAMMERFALL, Gibraltar hosted Duke Fontaine Marik's government-in-exile until he was able to reclaim his capital. When the Free Worlds League was reformed in 3139 Gibraltar was chosen as a Military District command center due to its remoteness from the Lyran border.[1]

In October 3147 the under-defended world was seized by Marian Hegemony forces, who drove off the defending FWLM units. The native warrior-monk order, the Brotherhood of the Rock, spearheaded an effective resistance campaign that prevented the Hegemony from assimilating the world.[1][34]

IlClan Era[edit]

Gibraltar was liberated from Marian control in July 3151. The MHAF garrison initially fought hard, but the death of their brutal commander left them willing to surrender to the Tamarind liberation force.[35]
