Greater Than Yourself is a short story by Jason Schmetzer that was published as introductory fiction for Field Manual: SLDF.
Plot Summary[edit]
Lieutenant John Hampton of the Star League Defense Force is being interrogated by pirates on an unknown planet somewhere in the Lyran Commonwealth. Hampton and his lance have been on a patrol when they were attacked and vanquished by the pirates. During interrogation under torture, Hampton repeatedly discloses only his rank, name and SLDF ID to his interrogator Bordon. Knowing that Bordon will shoot him anyways, Hampton finally reveals that just by listing him speak, he learned that Bordon is from a town called Howell on Garrison. His revelation is followed by the threat that the SLDF will also find out and eventually wipe out the pirates, because the SLDF never forgets.
