Description[edit]
The Harpy was the first ProtoMech ever created. Intended as a "proof-of-concept" more than an actual fighting unit, the Harpy doesn't outperform a standard Elemental battle armor suit in most categories. The only real advantage it offered over the battle armor was the top speed and size. Because of this it was quickly relegated to anti-infantry work.[3]
As a proof of concept however, the Harpy did demonstrate that the ProtoMech (with improvements) could become a viable weapon. After the destruction of Clan Smoke Jaguar, initially just Clan Hell's Horses and Clan Star Adder adopted the Harpy for their use, joined later by Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Fire Mandrill.[4]
Weapons and Equipment[edit]
The Harpy mounts only a single Machine Gun as its main weapon, while carrying just 100kg of ammunition limits the Harpy to a little over three minutes of continuous firing. However it is capable of jumping 90 meters at a time and can maintain a cruising speed of 32 km/h, adequate for hunting down infantry. Its light armoring - a single shot from a medium laser will punch through the center torso - is also sufficient for resisting most infantry-scale weapons, while its size can be intimidating to most troopers.[3]
Variants[edit]
- Harpy 2
- Introduced during the 3060s, this variant of the ProtoMech was given an Extended-Range Micro Laser. To fit the weapon, armor protection was slightly reduced. BV (2.0) = 48[5]
- Harpy 3
- This upgraded version of the Harpy was first spotted during the Jihad. This speedy variant has slightly increased the ProtoMech's armor to its arms, head, and legs. It is armed with a Light Machine Gun with one ton of ammunition. To increase its top speed to 80 km/h, the jump jets were dropped. BV (2.0) = 64[6]
- Harpy 4
- Similar version to the Harpy 3, this fourth version of the Harpy retains its earlier version's weapon, while designers reduced its top speed to 50 km/h. It regained its jump jets and added MASC equipment to give its brief speed boost. Armor protection was also reconfigured for the design. BV = 56[7]
Notes[edit]
- In German products, the unit's proper name was translated to Harpyie.
