Description[edit]
A melding of the popular Star League era Thug and the poorly regarded Charger, the samurai-themed Hatamoto-Chi was the first post–Succession Wars Draconis Combine BattleMech constructed utilizing recovered LosTech.
Tasked by Kanrei Theodore Kurita to reverse engineer examples of the advanced Star League Defense Force BattleMechs provided by ComStar in 3035 for future production, Luthien Armor Works secretly mated the weaponry of the Thug to the form of the maligned Charger. While initially unable to mass produce the advanced Endo Steel chassis required to match the Thug, the appearance of the early Hatamoto-Chi and their endless variations born of the Charger's spacious torso sent the combined Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth into confusion during the War of 3039. Originally manufactured on idle Wells Technologies production lines that had produced the Charger on the Combine capital, the design soon earned its place as the light assault 'Mech of choice in the Combine military. Using the cover name of the Maltex Corporation to throw off MIIO investigations, in an attempt to rebuild and upgrade after the Battle of Luthien, LAW sold the production rights to Independence Weaponry and Yori 'Mech Works located on the (then safer) FedCom border.[5][4]
Weapons and Equipment[edit]
Constructed with an Earthwerks VOL Endo Steel chassis, fitted with CASE protected ammo bins and clad in fifteen and a half tons of Mitchell Argon armor, the Hatamoto-Chi shared the features which made its parent design a nearly indestructible zombie 'Mech. The main area that Combine was unable to replicate the Thug was the older design's advanced Double Heat Sinks, eighteen standard Heat Sinks giving the Hatamoto-Chi a high heat curve in heavy combat.[4]
While short-cuts were taken in other areas, the Hatamoto-Chi matches the Thug's armament, twin arm-mounted Tiegart PPCs supported by a pair of torso-mounted Bical-6 SRM racks to pose a deadly threat no matter the era. Both SRMs have a ton of ammo each, more than adequate for their role as close-range support weaponry.[4]
Variants[edit]
- HTM-26T
- The original version produced during 3039.[6] Though lacking the LosTech of the HTM-27, the single production run of the original field-tested Hatamoto-Chi, completed on the verge of the War of 3039, came as a total shock to the attacking Lyran and Davion Forces. Since it was built on a standard chassis, the 26T had less armor, one less heat sink, and single ton of SRM ammunition in a standard ammo bin.[1][5] BV (2.0) = 1,536[6][7]
- HTM-26V
- A Hatamoto-Kaze model from 3039[8] listed on MUL with its source being the novel Heir to the Dragon. No further information is available. As with how the HTM-26T was an early model of the 27T without recovered Star League technology, presumably the HTM-26V is one of the variants of the 26T "mounting LRM launchers" as described in TR:3039, outfitted like the later HTM-27V Hatamoto-Kaze which had LRM-5s in place of the 26T's SRM-6s.
- HTM-26W
- A Hatamoto-Ku model from 3039[9] listed on MUL with its source being the novel Heir to the Dragon. No further information is available. As with how the HTM-26T was an early model of the 27T without recovered Star League technology, presumably the HTM-26W is one of the variants of the 26T "mounting autocannons" as described in TR:3039, outfitted like the later HTM-27W Hatamoto-Ku which had an AC/5 in place of the 26T's SRM-6s.
- HTM-27T2
- A model from 3114[10] listed on MUL with the source being Experimental Technical Readout: Republic, Volume 2. No further information is available. Presumably this is the mentioned "straighforward refit" of the 27T Hatamoto-Chi utilizing the double heat sinks and ER PPCs of the 28T.[11]
- HTM-27U
- The 27U, also known as the Hatamoto-Hi, was almost identical to the 27T. The differences in this 3047[12] design were the removal of the two SRM-6 launchers and the addition of four Medium Pulse Lasers and an additional heat sink to help with the additional heat burden. BV (1.0) = 1,251,[3] BV (2.0) = 1,627[12][13]
- HTM-27V
- The 27V, known within the Combine as the Hatamoto-Kaze, was a 3048[14] variant focused on long range combat. Both of the 'Mech's SRM-6 launchers were removed and replaced with a pair of LRM-5s and additional ammo, giving the Hatamoto-Kaze the ability to stay back from the battlefield and provide indirect fire. BV (1.0) = 1,302,[3] BV (2.0) = 1,595[14][15]
- HTM-27V2
- This Dark Age refit of the 27V from 3115[16] upgraded its PPCs to ER PPCs, replaced the LRM missile launchers with MML-5 racks, and added a C3 slave. One heat sink and two tons of missile ammo were removed to make up the weight difference. The remaining seventeen heat sinks were upgraded to doubles, however, making it cooler running than the 27V, and the one ton each of LRM and SRM ammo was still enough for 24 and 20 salvos, respectively.[17][18] BV (2.0) = 1,725[16][18]
- HTM-27W2
- Developed in 3115[21] like the 27V2, this Hatamoto-Ku variant removed the weapons of the 27W and replaced them with two ER PPCs and a Light AC/5. Two tons of ammunition were carried in a CASE II protected bay. This variant was most notable for its incorporation of a C3 boosted slave. Sixteen double heat sinks kept its heat under control. BV (2.0) = 1,699[21][11]
- HTM-27Y
- The 27Y, known as the Hatamoto-Mizo, removed both of the SRM-6 launchers and replaced them with an ER Large Laser and four additional single heat sinks. This 3050[22] design was a powerful long range combat 'Mech and could keep an enemy at range and slowly take the armor off of it. By the time an enemy unit was able to close with the Hatamoto-Mizo it could usually be taken out in physical combat. BV (1.0) = 1,311,[3] BV (2.0) = 1,675[22][23]
- HTM-28T
- A 3059[24] upgrade of the 27T model, the 28T exchanged the two PPCs for two ER PPCs. The two SRM-6 launchers were also upgraded to Streak SRM-6 racks. Finally, this variant was armed with two ER medium lasers and carried a C3 slave unit to allow it to share targeting data with other friendly units. These upgrades were achieved by switching to a smaller 240 rated engine, reducing the 'Mech's top speed to 54 km/h, but some of its lost maneuverability was made up for by the addition of three jump jets, giving it a jumping distance of 90 meters. The bulky new equipment necessitated the removal of the 'Mech's actuators in its lower arms and right hand, dramatically altering its appearance and reducing its hand-to-hand combat effectiveness, which were "frowned upon" by some Kuritan MechWarriors.[11] BV (1.0) = 1,754,[3][25] BV (2.0) = 2,039[24][26]
- HTM-30S
- This restyled Dark Age variant from 3138[30] known as the Hatamoto-Suna carried a Gauss rifle, twin MRM-20s enhanced with Apollo FCS, and a single ER medium laser. It used a standard fusion engine to reach a top speed of 54 km/h. The Gauss Rifle had three tons of ammunition, and the two missile launchers also drew from a shared three ton ammo bay. The 30S also used an XL Gyro to save some weight, and was protected by seventeen and a half tons of Ballistic-Reinforced Armor. BV (2.0) = 2,086[30][31][32]
- HTM-30T
- The Maltex Corporation had to stay competitive by producing a high-quality assault mech after the poor workmanship of the HTM-30S Hatamoto-Suna. Maltex merged the reliable Hatamoto-Chi and the innovative yet poorly constructed Hatamoto-Suna to make the 'Mech both affordable and durable while still giving the new 3142[33] Hatamoto-Chi HTM-30T the firepower of a modern assault mech with the classic Hatamoto-Chi styling, resulting in a huge hit that was produced in staggering numbers.[34] The 30T used an XL Gyro to save weight, had two Lords Light 3 Heavy PPC's, one in each arm, and changed out the 28T's Streak SRMs in favor of cost-effective standard SRM-6 launchers with one in each torso, each fed by a one-ton ammo bin protected by CASE II. The 30T was covered from head to foot with the maximum amount of Ballistic-Reinforced Armor its frame could support. Finally, the 30T used a standard 240 rated fusion engine, allowing it to lose a torso and still remain combat effective. The pilot still needed to remain heat conscious as it only carried fifteen double heat sinks. BV (2.0) = 2,196[33][35]
- HTM-30Z
- Another post-Blackout variant like the HTM-30S, this Hatamoto-Godai from 3140[36] was a regimental or battalion commander's unit. It used the same chassis, engine, and armor layout as the HTM-30S Hatamoto-Suna. Its only armament was a pair of Clan-spec ER medium lasers and a single Extended LRM-15 with three tons of ammunition. To compensate, the 30Z was equipped with a Guardian ECM Suite, Bloodhound Active Probe, two C3 boosted master computers, and a Command Console that had been armored. To defend against incoming missile fire, it had a Clan-built Laser Anti-Missile System in the right torso. BV (2.0) = 1,899[36][37][38]
- HTM-35K
- This 3076[39] production version of the HTM-35X was nearly identical to that unique experimental model. Keeping the Hatamoto-Kaeru designation, the armor, structure, and underwater equipment all remained the same. In fact the only change was the use of standard LRM-15s in the torsos instead of the long range torpedo launchers of the 35X. This allowed the 35K to fight on land much more effectively than the 35X prototype. BV (2.0) = 1,961[40][41] or 1,906[39]
- HTM-C
- A variation of the HTM-27U Hatamoto-Hi, the 3050[42] HTM-C variant was identical to that model with the exception of the replacement of a single heat sink with a C3 slave unit. The 'Mech was an excellent sniper because of the ability to share targeting data with friendly units. BV (1.0) = 1,237,[3][43] BV (2.0) = 1,627[42][44]
- HTM-CM
- The HTM-CM was also based on the HTM-27U Hatamoto-Hi variant and carried a C3 master computer into battle, allowing it to coordinate an entire C3 lance. This 3050[45] modification was done by removing two of the Medium Pulse Lasers and a heat sink. BV (1.0) = 1,238,[3][46] BV (2.0) = 1,573[45][47]
Custom Variants[edit]
- HTM-27T Hatamoto-Chi Daniel
- This 'Mech was personally awarded by Coordinator Takashi Kurita to Sorenson's Sabres commander Daniel Sorenson in 3039[48] during the lead-up to the War of 3039. The 'Mech Daniel received was a bridging design between the early field-tested HTM-26T and the later production HTM-27T. Dropping two tons of armor and outfitted with a bulkier and less refined Endo-Steel chassis, enough weight was saved to mount a pair of experimental Luthien Armor Works developed LB 10-X AC prototypes in it arms and a pair of Telos SRM-4 launchers in its chest. A ton of reloads for each SRM launcher and four tons of autocannon reloads in its CASE protected side torsos kept the 'Mech in the thick of battle.[49] BV (2.0) = 1,520[48]
- HTM-27T Hatamoto-Chi Daniel II
- Refitted in 3052[50] during the relative quiet of the Sabres' guard duty years on Luthien after the initial Clan Invasion, the prototype chassis and autocannons were swapped for production-grade components, while the power plant was swapped for a lighter model. Though reducing the 'Mech's maximum ground speed to 50 km/h, this freed up the weight to increase the armor to fifteen and half tons, add a C3 master computer, and swap the SRM-4s for a pair of Streak SRM-6 launchers, while retaining the same volume of missile and autocannon ammunition.[51] BV (2.0) = 1,661[50]
- HTM-27T Hatamoto-Chi (Lowenbrau)
- The personal 'Mech of Combine MechWarrior Vinny Lowenbrau. As the heaviest 'Mech in the Twenty-second Dieron Regulars, his "souped-up" Hatamoto-Chi was fitted in 3051[52] with upgraded components including fourteen double heat sinks and MASC to allow him to keep up with the agility and speed of his much lighter comrades.[53][54] BV (2.0) = 1,865[55]
- HTM-28T Hatamoto-Chi Shin
- A 3060[56] complete rearmament of an HTM-28T, only the C3 slave remained. A Gauss rifle was fitted in the left arm with three tons of ammunition riding in the left torso. The left torso also held six medium pulse lasers. The right arm carried a large sword. Triple-Strength Myomer greatly increased the damage done by the blade. Only ten double heat sinks were used, allowing the TSM to remain active. BV (2.0) = 2,192[57] or 2,213[56]
- HTM-35X Hatamoto-Kaeru
- A unique Jihad-era Experimental prototype variant that was made in 3075[58] in an attempt by Maltex Corporation of Unity's Miroslav Vondrus to design a mass-produced Amphibious Assault 'Mech. Based on the HTM-27T, the original model had its Endo Steel internal structure swapped for a composite internal structure. Its short-range missile launchers were replaced by a pair of 15-Tubed Long-Range Torpedo Launchers and a pair of 4-Tubed Short-Range Torpedo Launchers. The LRTs had two tons of ammo, while SRTs had only one. Its PPCs were replaced by Snub-Nose PPCs in each of its fully actuated arms. The 35X also had been given secondary surface weapons, in the form of five medium lasers. To handle its heat issues, the 'Mech was given ten double heat sinks. It employed a number of experimental innovations for handling the underwater environment, which included several Underwater Maneuvering Units and a MASS, as well as a Full-Head Ejection System. BV (2.0) = 1,961[59] or 1,906[58]

Notes[edit]
- The HTM-28T Hatamoto-Chi Shin variant has only appeared in Record Sheets: 3050 Upgrades Unabridged (Inner Sphere), with no information provided about the 'Mech's specific pilot. A potential candidate for the intended pilot is Shin Oshika, detailed in Field Manual: Draconis Combine as commanding officer of the Second An Ting Legion as of 3052[64] until at least 3059.[65] The Second An Ting Legion are described as field-testing prototype equipment, and the BattleMech Sword carried by this 'Mech is noted in the book as being recently developed, with rules for it appearing there for the first time.
