Information:The value of essays on BattleTechWiki
This is an information page. It is neither an encyclopedia article nor one of BattleTechWiki's policies or guidelines; rather, its purpose is to explain certain aspects of BattleTechWiki's norms, customs, technicalities, or practices. It may reflect differing levels of consensus and vetting. |
On BattleTechWiki, an essay is a special type of article. BattleTech Essays are articles on the Sarna.net BattleTechWiki that approach a given aspect of the BattleTech franchise or universe in a broad manner, exploring or explaining issues that the authors feel cannot adequately be covered in another article. While they must be rooted firmly in canon and/or apocryphal material, these essays, uniquely in the Sarna context, are allowed to include clearly marked assumptions, estimations, educated guesses and speculation - provided that such speculation is clearly marked as such, does not contradict established canon, and is plausible within the universe context.
While an essay is not a viable source or reference by itself, essays, whether personal user essays or open to general editing, can be used to give insight into the BattleTech universe beyond what standard Sarna pages can provide.
Uses for Essays[edit]
If the essay is well rooted in evidence, it would likely be a strong contribution to the wiki. Here are some uses essays could have:
- Knowledge Contribution: If the essay provides deep insights, original analysis, or well-researched lore about BattleTech—whether it's about factions, technology, or the game's history—it enhances the wiki’s credibility and usefulness.
- Community Engagement: A well-written essay can spark discussions, attract other enthusiasts, and even contribute to ongoing debates about BattleTech lore, mechanics, or development.
- Archival & Preservation: BattleTech has a vast and sometimes convoluted history across multiple media (tabletop, novels, video games). Essays that consolidate information can serve as valuable references for both new and veteran fans.
- Canonical Analysis & Synthesis: If the essay pulls together information from official sources (sourcebooks, novels, MechWarrior games, etc.), it can provide a clearer understanding of complex lore, historical events, or technological developments in the BattleTech universe.
- Clarification of Ambiguous Lore: BattleTech has inconsistencies and evolving lore. If the essay helps clarify discrepancies by referencing official retcons, it can be a valuable resource for lore-accurate discussions. A well-cited essay that compiles and explains information from multiple canon sources in one place is especially useful.
- Strategic or Technical Breakdown: An essay analyzing battle tactics, faction military doctrines, or the effectiveness of various mechs (based purely on in-universe information) could be valuable without being "fan-created" in the speculative sense.
- Source-Backed Historical Overviews: Essays that contextualize major events (like the Succession Wars, Clan Invasion, Jihad, etc.) by summarizing key details from multiple official books help readers grasp the bigger picture without needing to dig through dozens of sources.
