James Aren was the commanding officer of the Eighteenth Dieron Regulars during the War of 3039.[1]

On 19 July 3039, Sho-sho Aren and the Eighteenth Dieron Regulars arrived on Ancha in order to liberate it from the occupying forces of the mercenary DeMaestri's Sluggers and the Sixth FedCom RCT. The former unit was too busy fighting the remaining soldiers of the First Shin Legion to intercept Aren's landing craft and the latter unit was in the wrong place entirely. After successfully making planetfall, Aren personally lead his Alpha and Beta Battalions in creating a gap between the two enemy forces, while his Gamma Battalion launched a strike that allowed the Shin Legion to disengage from the Sluggers and link up with the Eighteenth Dieron. The first major battle for control of the planet occurred on 8 August, when a company of Sluggers engaged a battalion of Draconis Combine troops in the industrial city of Newark. As both sides dispatched further reinforcements to the scene, the battle soon became a three-week siege that left much of Newark and the Shin Legion in ruins and cost the remaining combatants a significant portion of their fighting strength.[1]
On 19 September, the aerospace and artillery assets of the Eighteenth Dieron put the capital city of New Summit under direct threat, instilling fear into the hearts of the Sixth FedCom at the cost of heavy casualties for Aren's aerospace fighters. When future regimental commander Chu-sa Basil Itemji launched a raid to capture the capital's primary medical center, home to the production of an antiviral vital for operations on Ancha, Aren subsequently ordered the Sixth FedCom to abandon the planet. While the enemy unit initially refused to heed Aren's command, word of Combine victories throughout the Dieron Military District ultimately convinced the Sixth FedCom to abandon the world on 26 September.[1]
