James Karoda was the commanding officer of the Third Company of the Fourteenth Sun Zhang Cadre's Second Battalion as of 3059.[1]

Tai-i Karoda, serving with the Fourteenth Sun Zhang Cadre, was stationed on Wolcott in 3059. A fifth-generation samurai and the third member of his family to graduate from the Sun Zhang Academy, Karoda's superiority in simulated battles infuriated the prior commander of the Second Battalion's Third Company and lead his superior officer to personally insult Karoda's family lineage. Karoda subsequently earned command of the Third Company after receiving permission from Fourteenth Cadre commander Tai-sa Susuma Goshiki to duel his detractor, killing his opponent and taking his position within the unit. As a MechWarrior, Karoda developed a skill for identifying which enemy units were vital to a battle plan and routed opposing forces on numerous occasions by eliminating their C3 computer-equipped BattleMechs.[1]
