Jasmine Liao was the first wife of Capellan Confederation Chancellor Maximilian Liao and the mother of his three children.[1]
History[edit]
Jasmine died in a mountain climbing accident at Mount Sumatra on Wei.[1] The date of her death was not mentioned, but it would have been at some point after the birth her youngest child (in 2996) and prior to Maximilian Liao's second marriage (which is also undated but occurred no later than 3021).
At some unspecified point Maximilian Liao had been gifted a Vindicator by Ceres Metals Industries (though as of 2990, the year he would become Chancellor, he piloted a legacy Marauder). Although the Vindicator publicly held no name, Maximilian privately named it "Jasmine" after his first wife by etching her name on its primary reactor brace. It was given to their daughter Candace Liao no later than 3017, who notably chose not to keep the name but instead (re)named the 'Mech Eleutheria.[2]
Notes[edit]
- Name - No surname or maiden name was specified so this article assumes that Jasmine adopted her husband's surname of Liao upon marrige.
- Citogenesis - Although it was mentioned in canon sources as early as 1987 that Maximilian Liao's first wife had died in an accident, her name was never mentioned in any source material over the next thirty-seven years.
However, when the initial Maximilian Liao article for the Sarna BattleTechWiki was created on 2 April 2007 (in the website's earliest days, seven months after the wiki was launched) the article already asserted that his first wife's name had been "Jasmine Liao" without citing any sources or references for the name. The name, which was simply never questioned, checked, or challenged for the next seventeen years, apparently originated in an equally unsourced "List of BattleTech characters" on Wikipedia that was used as the basis for the Maximilian Liao article on Sarna BTW back in 2007 and doesn't exist anymore. It is theorized that at the root of the issue there was a mixup with Takashi Kurita, who indeed did have a wife named Jasmine.
It was only discovered during factchecking for the 2024 BattleTech: Legends II sourcebook that there were no canon sources that actually gave the character's name. This book finally established that her first name was "Jasmine." It is believed that the name was informed by the false or at least unsourced information presented on Sarna BTW, which the book then retroactively canonized by accident (a situation otherwise also known as "circular reporting" or "citogenesis" on Wikipedia) or possibly deliberately as a nod to Sarna BTW. It should be noted, though, that technically only her first name was canonically confirmed; the Liao surname is inferred from her being married to Maximilian Liao. Her maiden name remains unknown at this time.
In any case, the character's name had been a redlink for seventeen years until the creation of this article once her name was canonically established; previously, the only Jasmine Liao article on Sarna BTW covered the seventh Chancellor of the Capellan Confederation, a character from the twenty-fifth century.
