John Amos "French Fry" Ames served in the Seventeenth Recon Regiment, also known as Camacho's Caballeros.[2]

History[edit]

John Amos Ames was one of those on active duty with the Caballeros in 3056 when they were employed by Chandrasekhar Kurita to provide security for one of his companies, Hachiman Taro Enterprises. Prior to marrying Raven O'Connor, Ames had been a member of a circle of friends in the Caballeros that included Lieutenant Senior Grade Buck "Sawbuck" Evans, Lieutenant Junior Grade Billy "Cowboy" Payson, and Lieutenant Rebel "Reb" Perez; it was during these wild bachelor days that he earned the call sign "French Fry", based on what he used to stick up his nose at parties.[2]

When the regiment arrived on Hachiman, Ames was serving as a lieutenant in Adelante Company under Captain Juan Pedro "Don Coyote" O'Rourke.[2] Following Don Coyote's death in an attack on the HTE compound in Masamori on the 15th of October, Ames was promoted to captain and took command of Adalente.[1]

In December 3057, there were rumors in the regiment that the most recent bout of marital discord between John and Raven had been sparked by Raven's belief that her husband had been paying too much attention to Janine Mariposa Esposito, a Valkyrie pilot from Cochise company.[3] Janine was killed on 19 December 3057 while trying to move a truck loaded with explosives away from the hotel in which many of the Caballeros were staying.[4] After Janine's death, John and Raven reconciled and then broke up again at least once.[5]

On the 23rd of April 3058 the Caballeros and their allies launched an attempt to break the occupation of Towne by DCMS troops and their Black Dragon allies. John was part of a group who infiltrated the Turanian Transport Company complex in Port Howard, the capital city of Towne, where a number of 'Mechs captured from the Caballeros had been stored. John gained access to a Spider, using it in the fight against occupying forces until damage from an enemy Quickdraw led to the Spider slamming headfirst into a concrete pier, killing him. Raven witnessed the incident, and believed him to be dead.[6] John actually survived the crash with only some bruising, but on finding out that he was alive Raven broke his nose, putting him briefly in hospital.[7]

John had two children by 3057.[3]

BattleMech[edit]

Prior to the death of Don Coyote on Hachiman, John piloted a Stinger. For a time,[8] John used a Phoenix Hawk[1] that had been Don Coyote's 'Mech until his death, but subsequently passed the Phoenix Hawk on to Lieutenant Junior Grade Jesse James "Outlaw" Leyva, a Dispossessed MechWarrior from the regiment who joined Adelante. This left John free to continue piloting his Stinger. In contrast with many other units, there was no stigma against lighter 'Mechs in the Caballeros, many of whom cut their teeth on light AgroMechs while young.[8] John's Stinger bore the nickname "Jumping Jack"[6]
