Jonathan Fujimoto was the commanding officer of the Fifth Sword of Light during the War of 3039.[1]

History[edit]

On 19 July 3039, Sho-sho Fujimoto's Fifth Sword of Light and the inexperienced Twenty-fourth Dieron Regulars arrived in the Pike IV system in order to free the Draconis Combine world from the occupying Thirtieth Lyran Guards and Hansen's Roughriders. Fujimoto initially chose to focus his efforts on taking the equatorial continent of Karasia, which drew his forces into a lengthy cat-and-mouse chase with the Roughriders that would see no significant fighting until 13 August. On that day, the entirety of the Fifth Sword managed to catch a battalion of Roughriders in the mining town of Mercator before Fujimoto's troops pushed straight through the settlement—badly hurting the Roughriders while causing large amounts of collateral damage to Mercator. Karasia was under Fujimoto's control by 20 August but the time it took to accomplish this deed gave the Thirtieth Guards enough to time to reinforce their positions and for the Seventeenth Skye Rangers to arrive on Pike IV from off-world.[1]

Fujimoto, hoping to repeat the victory at Mercator, ordered his Second Battalion under Chu-sa Hohiro Tatsuma to push straight through the defenses of Pike IV's capital city. This proved to be a misstep, with the combined might of the Seventeenth Rangers and Thirtieth Guards forcing Tatsuma into retreat after only ninety minutes, before the invigorated Lyrans launched their own heavy counterattack. By mid-September, Fujimoto had lost three hundred kilometers of territory to his foes and his entire contingent of aerospace assets had been knocked out of the sky. Only word of Combine victories elsewhere in the theater convinced the Lyran commander to withdraw from Pike IV on 6 November, granting Fujimoto victory by a narrow margin.[1]

Following the conclusion of the War of 3039, Fujimoto requested that Coordinator Takashi Kurita grant him permission to commit seppuku in order to atone for his unit's poor showing on Pike. While Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita considered Fujimoto to be an excellent officer, he ultimately chose not to intervene in order to preserve Fujimoto's life. Chu-sa Tatsuma served as Fujimoto's second during the seppuku ceremony and would preside over the Fifth Sword of Light during the next several years of rebuilding.[1]

Quotes[edit]

Winning is important, yes, but not as important as simply fighting.
