History[edit]
Origins[edit]
The order was formed by Devlin Stone and David Lear in 3088.[1]
Disbandment and Legacy[edit]
The end of the Republic signaled the end of its Knights. Some, like Maeve Stirling, returned to their homeworlds; in her case, Northwind. Others, like Justin Hall, became Mercenaries, but all renounced to their titles. In fact, in Galatea, a lot of ex-RAF soldiers claimed to have been Knights, but that only gave them a bad reputation.[2]
Many years later, the ethos of the revived Gunslinger Program in the new Star League was modeled (with some changes) on the Knights of the Republic of the Sphere with access open to any worthy Clan or Spheroid personnel and likewise offered sources of inspiration for the public and other military personnel to emulate.[3]
Ranks[edit]
Exarch[edit]
Paladin[edit]
The title Paladin of the Republic is the highest true title within the order. Numbering eighteen members, seventeen Paladins and the Exarch form the Council of Paladins—the ruling body of the Republic, with the final member being the secretive Ghost Paladin.
The further honorific title of Paladin Exemplar is bestowed upon the oldest serving Paladin.[4]
Knight[edit]
The title of Knight of the Republic is reserved for one hundred members of the order.[5]
Knight-Errant[edit]
The title of Knight-Errant of the Republic is the lowest true rank within the order, the total number of Knights-Errant at any given time reflects the number of worlds within the Republic.[5]
Intelligence[edit]
Ghost-Knight[edit]
The Ghost Knights are a major Intelligence agency within the Republic of the Sphere, how many of them there are is unknown.
Honorary Knights[edit]
Republic Exarchs, from time to time, granted honorary knighthood to distinguished individuals, generally scientists and artists. Honorary knights included scientist Pierre Cormier and composer Eduard Bioucek.[6]
