Planetary History[edit]

Star League Era[edit]

Leskovik was settled shortly prior to 2622 by the Sufi Bektashi Order, who were looking for a secluded world on which to practice their beliefs in peace. The initial colonization met with disaster due to Leskovik's abundance of highly aggressive postsaurid predators, with the expedition's leadership being eaten alive by sabretooth puffins within minutes of exiting their DropShip for the first time. Most regions of the world also experienced frequent flash flooding, which the settlers had no answer for at the time. The surviving colonists built their walled city and future planetary capital Kosova in the highlands of a continent they named Dardania, and settled into a simple, sustainable lifestyle.[2]

Everything changed for the settlers, however, when utterly massive quantities of natural gas were discovered beneath the world's surface. The Bektashis became incredibly rich as additional colonists flocked from the surrounding Tamar Pact to exploit the abundance of hydrocarbons. During this century long "Black Gold Rush" the world imported BattleMechs to cull hostile wildlife, some of which was large enough to devour combat vehicles whole. The flash flooding problem was dealt with by constructing raft-like webs of mobile habitats called siphonopolises. The world's resources were opened up for exploitation, but life remained dangerous enough that the majority of the population remained on Dardania.[2]

The planets newfound wealth create a class of oligarchic gas barons. By 2731 the gas barons, under the leadership of Sandro Qemali, swept aside Leskovik's original government and replaced it with an aristocracy. House Qemali was elevated to Dukedom to reward it for its efforts to ensure oligarchic rule.[2]

Succession Wars[edit]

As fusion power became increasing rare in the Inner Sphere, the gas barons of Leskovik prospered. Leskovik became an increasingly important source of the polymers used in creating engine shielding and heat sinks. During the Second Succession War the Draconis Combine pushed the border close enough to Leskovik that it became a frequent raiding target for the Rasalhague Regulars. The ruling oligarchy managed to in part turn these raids to their advantage, instituting a permanent "state of military emergency" that provided legal justification for increasingly harsh and exploitative treatment of their workers. Mercenaries brought in to augment the world's anemic militia found themselves putting down uprisings and riots more frequently than they encountered Kuritan raiders.[2]

In 3001, an uprising by the Roughnecks' Union nearly succeeded in toppling Leskovik's government. Due to the risk of regional economic disruption if Leskovik's exports were interrupted, Archon Alessandro Steiner ordered Lohengrin and Loki to put the rebels down. The intelligence agencies suppressed the rebellion, but caused tens of thousands of civilian deaths as collateral damage.[2]

Post-Succession Wars[edit]

The discovery of the Helm Memory Core devastated Leskovik's economy as the return of abundant fusion power eliminated the demand of Leskovik's polymers. By the 3040s, the planet was in deep recession. The oligarchy became increasingly repressive in their attempts to maintain their power and wealth by squeezing the workers even further. Families and villages that spoke out were subject to bloody collective punishment, with ex-Lohengrin operatives retained by the aristocracy planning atrocities for maximum effect. One gas baron was even known to publicly feed rebellious subjects to his captive Whulk.[2]

Clan Invasion[edit]

In September, 3050, Clan Jade Falcon issued a Trial of Possession for Leskovik during Wave Four of Operation REVIVAL. The defending Planetary Militia lured the Second Falcon Jaegers into the Leskovik Refinery Complex. During the battle, stray shots hit a natural gas tank. The tank exploded and destroyed combatants from both sides. After the Falcons completed their conquest of the world, it was determined afterwards that the explosion had been accidental. The complex was not rebuilt, to remain as a memorial to those who died in the battle.[21] The invasion of Leskovik was the last of seven in which the Jade Falcons allowed Clan Diamond Shark's Diamond Keshik and Diamond Shark Khans Ian Hawker and Barbara Sennet to participate prior to the call for a Grand Kurultai aboard the Dire Wolf.[35]

The victorious Falcons executed any oligarchs who lacked the good sense to flee before their conquest of the planet was complete. This earned them the gratitude of the local population, if not their trust. Clan rule came with universal access to food, shelter and employment for the first time, and while the Falcons were determined to extract the planet's resources, they were not as mono-maniacally focused on exploiting the workers to maximize revenue as the oligarchs had been.[2]

Refusal War[edit]

On October 3057, Ulric Kerensky's forces invaded Leskovik. Falcon warriors retreated to the walled city of Belsen. Clan Wolf forces were inexperienced with urban combat, resulting in them taking heavy casualties and nearly leveling the city before the last Falcons were dug out.[2]

Jihad[edit]

In 3073, Etienne Balzac's Society shut down HPG communication and merchant JumpShip traffic across Falcon territory. While isolated, Leskovik experienced an outbreak of a highly lethal disease they named yimpsi fever (after the Zulu word for Hyena; one of the plague's symptoms was uncontrollable laughter). During the four month period before the Falcons were able to send medical aid, a third of the planetary population succumbed to the disease.[2]

Dark Age[edit]

In June 3147, Leskovik was attacked by Clan Hell's Horses's Seventy-first Mechanized Cavalry as part of Operation NOYAN. The Falcons denied the Horses safcon, and comprehensively defated the invaders in a series of globe-spanning battles.[36][37][2]

As the Jade Falcon Occupation Zone collapsed into anarchy, Leskovik became an independent world for the first time, but one precariously close to three powers intent on expansion.[2]

Geography[edit]

Leskovik has four continents named Dardania, Kolonja, Tetova, and Tirana. Dardania is the center of the planetary population. Kolonja features several siphonopoli and rolling emerald-green hills, and was the site of several battles during Operation NOYAN. Tirana features rolling sand dunes.[2]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Kosova: a walled city on the Dardania continent and planetary capital[2]
  • Leskovik Refinery: refinery for liquified natural gas prior to Operation REVIVAL. The plant was destroyed during the Clan Invasion and left a ruin as a monument commemorating the brave warriors struck down by fire.[21]
