Mavelo Kang briefly ruled the planet of Verde after her family usurped command of the duchy from the traditional ruling House Nelson.
History[edit]
Mavelo Kang came to power shortly after her brother, Baron Benicio Kang, carried out a coup against the rightful Duke of Verde, Sigmund Nelson, while he was away on campaign against the Draconis Combine in 2806.[1][2] Conspiring against Benicio, Mavelo had him assassinated and appointed herself regent while his two young sons waited to come of age. Less than a year after her ascension to the position of regent, both of the boys had died under mysterious circumstances. Courtiers as the ducal palace were told to begin calling Mavelo queen and she quickly consolidated her power.[2]
In 2825, a young mercenary captain arrived on Verde and offered the Queen his services. As her world was already suffering from the effects of repeated DCMS Chain Gang raids and her garrison was depleted, Mavelo agreed, though she offered him far less than standard compensation.[2] Mavelo soon became jealous and suspicious of how quickly the captain rose to prominence and popularity amongst the people of Verde and by 2827 had pieced together his identity: Lawrence Nelson, the son of Sigmund Nelson thought killed alongside his father.[2] Knowing that she could not let the legitimate heir to the throne of Verde survive and fearing that he would assassinate her, Mavelo dispatched elements of her personal guard led by Captain Ignacio Hernandez to dispatch the threat to her rule.[1][2]
Disguised as Chain Gang raiders, the guards sought to ambush Nelson and his second in command, Tariq al-Nahib. Unbeknownst to Mavelo or her loyalists, a member of the royal guard had tipped Nelson and al-Nahib off to the upcoming assassination plot and the would-be killers were instead ambushed by their erstwhile prey. Hernandez was captured and used by Nelson as evidence of Mavelo's machinations when he revealed his identity to his people.[1][2] A popular uprising quickly restored House Nelson to power and imprisoned the usurper.[1] Mavelo Kang, along with Hernandez and her other supporters, were all executed by hanging before the end of the year.[2]
