MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries/'Mech Works Attack

‘Mech Works Attack[edit]

BRIEFING[edit]

Destroy the indicated facilities along with the Fafnir prototypes located at the Von Straub Proving Grounds. Expect strong point defense and Assault ‘Mech defenders. Limited allied air assets are being deployed to assist in the attack. In addition to your assault force, Davion commandos plan to infiltrate the base by helicopter to raid the main research database. Assisting their mission will earn you a hefty bonus.

Castle: Okay, Commander. This mission is the real deal. It’s a pretty safe bet Steiner’s allies won’t be offering us any more contracts after we conduct an assault of this scale against their military-industrial concerns. I speak for everyone here in saying we’ll follow you either way.

DURING MISSION[edit]

Spectre: Here’s where we make our mark in this civil war. We’re throwing in with Victor’s forces. We may have had some decent deals with the Lyrans in the past, but it’s time to get in or get out. I’m not quite ready to get out, and the smart money is on Victor.

BullsEye: Amen!

Spectre: Great! Give a ready report, and let’s go introduce ourselves.

BullsEye: This is BullsEye. Give me a target.

Hannibal: This is Hannibal. Ready op.

Aisa: This is Aisa. I am prepared!

Spectre: Units at Alpha moving to engage. Be ready.

Castle: Looks like a Heavy Lance backed by a pair of Zeuses.

BullsEye: Enemy choppers just popped up on my radar!

Spectre: Outpost at Alpha destroyed. Moving to assault main base at Beta.

Castle: Acknowledged. Commandos are lifting off in their Karnov. ETA two minutes. Clear the defenses for them.

Spectre: Roger. We’ll signal when the base is clear of hostiles.

Spectre: Whoa! Calliopes on the towers. Watch for ‘em!

Spectre: Looks like they finished arming those Fafnirs. This is gonna be one hell of a fight!

Castle: Watch yourself, sir. Recovered data indicates that Heavy Gauss Rifles are murderous within six hundred meters.

Spectre: Yes, I read that. And each of those Fafnirs mounts a pair of those things.

Spectre: Base clear of hostiles. Defense grid neutralized. Send green light to the commandos.

Castle: Done. Long range scan shows two lances of enemy ‘Mechs closing on your location. Looks like two groups of Heavies.

Spectre: I thought this was going too well. Okay, people, we’ve got two lances of bad guys coming to break up our party, vicinity Nav Point Gamma. We have to buy time for our friends on the ground to get out of here.

Castle: Commander, they’re lifting off. Thirty seconds and they’ll be clear.

Spectre: Castle, we’re clear of enemies. Let’s get Salvage in here and see what kind of payday we’ve earned.

Castle: Excellent work, commander. A solid operation all around. I estimate twelve hours before the Lyrans can mount any effective counterattack. We should be well away by then.

Spectre: Let’s hope so.

AFTERMATH[edit]

Notice from the MRBC: Lyran Alliance Black List

To: [PLAYER NAME], commander of [UNIT NAME]

This is a formal notice to [UNIT NAME], sponsored regiment of the [SPONSOR UNIT NAME]. The Lyran Alliance has put you on their black list due to your continued support of Victor Davion’s forces in the FedCom Civil War. They provided a list of Davion contracts your company has completed against Steiner forces (see attached document). Your unit will no longer receive Steiner contract information from the MRBC. This will not impact your MRBC ratings for reliability or loyalty. The MRBC is neutral in this war, and merely is notifying you that some contracts may no longer be available to you.

The following excerpt was filed by the Steiner representative: “Spectre, you have been a thorn in our side for too long. When Archon Katrina finally wins this war, you should expect a suitable ‘reward’ for your earnest efforts.”

Castle: Good work, Commander. As expected, the Steiner liaison has blacklisted us from further Lyran contracts on MercNet, but that should hardly matter. It looks like the Davions have plenty of work for us elsewhere. Check your star system overview for details.
