MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries/Griffon Base

New Canton

New Canton until recently was part of the Saiph Triumvirate, consisting of New Canton, Saiph, and Tall Trees. The Triumvirate traded hands during the Fourth Succession War from the Capellan Confederation to the Federated Commonwealth. In the FedCom Civil War, most of the Triumvirate has been left defenseless, and now it has fallen before Clan Wolf’s aggression.

Griffon Base

BRIEFING

Hot-drop onto the fire base and defend it against all Capellan aggressors. A skeleton staff of the Stalwart Support infantry company is manning the base defense grids. Col. Harry Sanders stands ready to relinquish command of the theater to you upon landing.

Castle: You made the right decision, sir. With Katrina in exile and Victor triumphant, we need to secure our future as a mercenary unit. Taking control of the situation in New Canton is just the foothold we need.

DURING MISSION

Spectre: Spectre units hot-dropping onto Griffon Base. Touchdown in fifteen seconds. Over.

Sanders: Roger, Spectre. Stalwart Support stands ready to assist you. Welcome to New Canton, sir.

Spectre: Spectre is on-site, taking command of Griffon Base. Good to have you on board, Colonel. What’s your situation report?

Sanders: Our old friends, the Capellans, have caught wind of your intentions on New Canton. They deployed a reinforced company of the Harloc Raiders to demolish Griffon, along with any defending units. Our outer defense screen is already engaging at Nav Point Alpha.

Spectre: We just got here. Hope the place is worth fighting for.

Sanders: Well, the last internal audit for the firebase and extended facilities was just over 86 million C-bills.

Spectre: 86 million sounds worth it. Moving to support defense at Alpha. Okay, people, here’s where we carve out a little piece of the Inner Sphere for ourselves. Take them down fast and hard.

BullsEye: Of course.

Spectre: I expect nothing less.

Spectre: Engaging two Heavy lances at Alpha.

Castle: Be advised, I show a large force moving in from the south.

Spectre: Heavy Lance eliminated!

Castle: More enemy ‘Mechs approaching. Eastern ridge!

Spectre: I have a visual on a full company of armor. Myrmidons and Demolishers.

Spectre: Enemy ‘Mechs at Alpha eliminated.

Sanders: Commander, my northern scout platoon reports two more Assault Lances inbound on Griffon Base. Looks like their final push.

Spectre: Roger. Thanks for the tip, Colonel. Have your people pull back to the inner stockade.

Sanders: Roger. Stalwart assets returning to base.

Castle: I have good track on inbound Assault Lances. Locking intercept point, Nav Gamma. You’d better get to them before they start taking our new home apart.

Wu Deng Tang: This is Colonel Wu Deng Tang, depart this region immediately and I’ll overlook my orders to kill you all.

Castle: Is it me, or does he sound scared?

Blaze: I’ve had enough of these Capellans.

Spectre: Thanks for the offer, Wu Tang. I’ll pass.

Wu Deng Tang: Prepare to meet death, young dog! Harloc Raiders, commence final assault!

Spectre: Not looking good, Wu Tang. Better punch out.

Wu Deng Tang: Insolent wretch. I’ll see you spitted on my banner pole!

Spectre: Take your best shot!

Spectre: Wu Tang is dead!

Cho: Bastards! This is Lieutenant Cho, we concede the field. Harloc Raiders, fall back. We are breaking off. Cease fire.

Spectre: Not so fast, Cho!

Spectre: That’s the end of ‘em. Area secure!

Castle: Confirm all raiders destroyed. Nice work, Commander. Liao may have to rethink his campaigns here on New Canton.

Spectre: Agreed. Let the planetary governor know we’ve secured Griffon Base for ourselves, and stand ready to negotiate terms of service.

Castle: Preparing the report now, sir.

Spectre: Excellent. Things are looking up.

AFTERMATH

Spectre: Securing Griffon Base as our own set us up well for taking on contracts throughout the Chaos March. In time, our reputation and firepower put us on par with any RCT in the Inner Sphere. Life was good, if only for a while. Little did we know that a storm was rising on Terra that would sweep all before it. A storm terrible in its passing.
