Planetary History[edit]

Mechdur, along with Coromodir VI, Guldra, and Itrom, was originally settled by the Free Worlds League as part of a privately funded expedition that followed in the wake of the settlement of Taurus.[32] However, significant growth did not come until after the Reunification War, when Mechdur was located in the Sian Commonality of the Capellan Confederation, close to the border with the Taurian Concordat and near the worlds of Mangzhangdian and Umgard.[3] After the Reunification War the Capellan confederation built several industrial complexes there.[33] The colony was judged a failure due to an inefficient bureaucracy, and the Capellans withdrew, leaving the local hereditary oligarchy in control.[1] The system vanished from the maps used by the Inner Sphere during the First Succession War.[6][10]

In truth, the Capellan governors had left the running of affairs to the local oligarchs, who conspired to make the Confederation believe that the world was an economic lost cause, resulting in Mechdur's independence.[34]

Mechdur was the first system to join the Aurigan Coalition after its formation in 2910. Its location—within one jump of most Coalition systems[1]—as well as its wealth and technology, were invaluable to the burgeoning nation. The Aurigan Coalition made trade concessions and provided the oligarchs with market access in exchange for the oligarch's agreement to join the Coalition. [33]

By 3026, Mechdur was a hub for major industry in the region, turning out consumer goods as well as BattleMech weapons. Each of the world's three continents had its own major starport. Space stations served passenger and cargo traffic around the recharge station, and there are small settlements supporting manufacturing and the sciences elsewhere in the system.[1]
