Mohammed Selim was a politician from the Rim Worlds Republic, most famous for serving as regent during the Amaris Civil War.
History[edit]
Mohammed Selim was born to a family of commoners on the planet of Delagoa. His father was a carpenter while his mother worked as a mid-level bureaucrat in a finance company. Mohammed spent much of his youth acting as a surrogate parent to his five siblings due to his parents struggling to raise their large family. Mohammed received a military education at the prestigious Apollo Military Institute but due to failing to empathize with the military instead pursued a career in civil service.[1]
By 2740, Selim's talents as administrator saw him rise to head of his department. Two years later, he was promoted to Finance Minister. In 2746, the Speaker of the Rim Worlds Parliament was forced to resign by a sex scandal, clearing the way of Mohammed to step into his role as effective head of the government. Though an uninspiring and uncharismatic figure, Selim's brutal efficiency and passionate loyalty to the Amaris clan allowed him to establish a solid working relationship with Stefan Amaris. The future Usurper felt unable to trust members of his own family, so when his plans for Operation APOTHEOSIS required him to spend years on Terra seducing Richard Cameron, he installed Selim as his regent on Apollo.[1]
Selim loyally implemented any policy Amaris sent to him via HPG, but was otherwise given a free hand to govern the Republic as he saw fit. After the establishment of the Amaris Empire, Selim was even confirmed as the permanent Governor of the Rim Worlds.[1] When Aleksandr Kerensky demanded Selim surrender the Republic on 9 August 2767, Selim refused in favor of attempting to hold out long enough for the reinforcements Amaris had promised him to arrive.[2] Unfortunately for Selim no reinforcements were coming, and the Star League Defense Force would rapidly conquer the Rim Worlds. Selim lacked military skill[1] but even if he hadn't, he had little in the way of resources. When the SLDF appeared over Apollo, Selim's fearful reaction paralyzed the government.[3] By late October 2768, a popular uprising had broken out on Selim's capital. The 832nd Amaris Dragoons and Sixth Amaris Lancers at first were able to suppress the insurgency, but soon both regiments collapsed under mass defections and infighting.[4] Selim met his end at the hand of a mob of enraged citizens and Rift Republican Army operatives, who hung his body from a traffic gantry.[1] Selim's death marked the effective end of Kerensky's conquest of the Rim Worlds.[5]
