Planetary History[edit]
New Crete's relatively human friendly atmosphere and diverse native wildlife attracted several attempts at colonization during the Age of War. It is unclear if these attempts failed or were intended to be temporary parts of a longer term settlement plan, but in either case the world had no permanent human presence until the time of the Star League. The final impediment to colonization was overcome when League provided atmospheric processing plants to scrub microbial taints that wrecked havoc on the immune system of those who inhaled from the local atmosphere. New Crete's settlers came from Terra's Greek states.[31]
Unfortunately for the people of New Crete, their atmospheric processors began to fail during the Amaris Civil War, and efforts to repair them failed. The First Succession War accelerated the world's decline, as the vital processor plants succumbed to trade disruptions and active sabotage, which the locals blamed on agents of rival Successor States or neighboring planetary governments. Ravaged by the resurgent microbial taint, the planet's population collapsed from close to half a million to only twelve thousand. Before the war had even ended the Capellan Confederation made the decision to pull out of New Crete, and the world had disappeared from the Inner Sphere's star charts.[1] Unbeknownst to the Capellans, the local population survived and, once their immune systems adapted to the taint, the population began to rebound. New Crete's population has greatly resented the Confederation ever since.[32]
After the Word of Blake Jihad, Interstellar Expeditions rediscovered New Crete[1]. The Confederation briefly attempted to recolonize the world, but the Victoria War and Capellan Crusades diverted resources and terminated the world before it had been fully surveyed or any settlers had actually touched down on the world's surface. The Capellans never became aware of the existing population, whose way of life was consciously designed to reduce the chance of discovery from orbit. By 3152 New Crete's people number close to a million. Their technology resembles Terra during the early 20th century, with the exception of consciously avoiding electronic communication or aerospace craft.[32]
Notes[edit]
New Crete is one of several planets Ghosts of Obeedah listed as an option for being the location of Obeedah, one of the Word of Blake's Hidden Five. Which world truly plays host to Obeedah was left undetermined in the sourcebook. If New Crete is Obeedah, the information presented in this article about the world's history will be incomplete, and information about it's state in 3152 will be incorrect.
