History[edit]

Formation[edit]

The Ninth Avalon Hussars had the unfortunate distinction of being the first new Avalon Hussars regiment to be commissioned because of the destruction of another Hussars regiment. The Third Avalon Hussars—known as "Cerberus' Fury"—fell in battle in the 2360s, and the survivors from the Third were incorporated into the new Ninth regiment. With the assistance of those survivors from the Third, the Ninth went on to earn a fierce reputation, along with the nickname "The Hounds of Cerberus," and were active throughout the Age of War and Star League era.[1]

Succession Wars[edit]

The Ninth Avalon Hussars fought throughout the First Succession War, and by the time the war drew to a close, the Ninth were operating at perhaps half a regiment below their full prewar strength of four battalions.[4] The Ninth rebuilt in the interwar period, to the point that they had a combat strength almost equivalent to one and a half standard regiments, but the Ninth were one of seven Avalon Hussars regiments to be destroyed during the Second Succession War.[2]

Tactics[edit]

During the Star League era, all of the Avalon Hussars were required to focus on being both flexible and mobile, with every regiment required to be capable of deploying within eight hours, though many of the Hussars struggled to actually achieve this. The Ninth was supported by an aerospace wing, primarily attached to the Ninth to provide ground support.[1]

During the Star League era, the Ninth was highly proficient at operating in hellish conditions—conditions that included raging infernos. As a consequence, while the Ninth was stationed on the planet Cohay it frequently deployed to fight the forest fires that were a recurring feature of dry seasons on the planet's northern continent.[1]

Rules[edit]

First Succession War[edit]

  • Between 2786 and 2807, the composition of randomly-generated lances from the Ninth Avalon Hussars are determined using a single roll on the Random Unit Assignment Tables per lance, with all of the lance 'Mechs being the resulting type. Between 2808 and 2819, the lance composition is determined using two rolls on the Random Unit Assignment Tables per lance, and from 2820 lance composition is determined using one roll per 'Mech per lance.[5]
  • When generating Ninth Avalon Hussars forces using Random Unit Assignment Tables during the First Succession War, Ninth Avalon Hussars receive a +4 modifier to each roll on the appropriate table.[6]
