History[edit]
Star League Era[edit]
During the Star League era the Ninth Pesht Regulars shared a common structure with the other regiments of the Pesht Regulars, although the exact competition of each regiment and supporting formations would vary depending upon the role being performed. Lacking a border with a hostile major power, the Regulars usually suffered from lower holdings of combat expendables, including armor, because of the low chances of them seeing combat. However, as guardians of Luthien, the capital of the Draconis Combine, the Regulars were well-trained in performing drills, marches, and parades, providing examples to encourage greater loyalty amongst the citizens of the Combine. The Regulars were evidently successful at this, as the Pesht Military District continued to generate far more recruits for the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery than it did the Star League Defense Force.[1]
The second and markedly less savory role performed by the Regulars was that of suppressing civilian rebellions; acting in support of other formations, particularly the Sword of Light brigade, the Regulars took on responsibility for garrisoning and policing pacified areas, freeing other, higher-readiness formations for other actions. The Regulars would also be redeployed to other Military Districts on a temporary basis to cover garrison postings where other combat units had been deployed forward. In the closing years of the Star League, the Ninth Pesht Regulars and her sister regiments were frequently understrength, as a result of higher-quality personnel being moved on to other district brigades and even Sword of Light regiments, with replacement personnel being supplied slowly by the Bureau of Substitution.[1]
Third Succession War[edit]
In 3025 the unit was stationed on Schwartz.[4]
Fourth Succession War[edit]
The Ninth Pesht Regulars were involved in the DCMS counterattacks against Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces commands during Operation GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG. The Twelfth Donegal Guards were in the process of conquering Stanzach when the Ninth Pesht Regulars and the Thirteenth Rasalhague Regulars dropped onto the planet and attacked, nearly pushing the Donegal Guards off the planet completely. Reinforcements for the Twelfth in the form of the Eighth Donegal Guards allowed the Lyrans to retain a foothold on the planet heading into the lull during the middle of the Fourth Succession War.[5]
Augmented by the secret Tyr-affiliated assault regiment the Lyran forces went on the attack again in mid-3029 on Stanzach, breaking through the DCMS defensive line along the river Lule in part due to how thinly the Combine forces were stretched along the 200 km defensive line, and in part due to the poor equipment the Ninth had been provided with. The senior officers in both regiments were confident that they could continue to fight, as they still had the planetary capital and the valuable diamond mines under their control, but they were ordered to withdraw from Stanzach at the end of July by Brigadier General Sven Johannsen, the second-in-command of the Rasalhague Military District.[5]
War of 3039[edit]
The Ninth Regulars were stationed on Schwartz during the entire war and saw no active combat.[6]

Clan Invasion[edit]
The Ninth faced the Smoke Jaguars' Nineteenth Striker Cluster on Schwartz in March 3050. The Nineteenth did follow the rules of zellbrigen with the Ninth, however, when they saw the Ninth trying to behave honorably, though the Ninth moved the fighting off the plains of Schwartz and into a nearby city. Tai-sa Graham fought a single Trial against Star Colonel Thilla Showers that allowed most of the Ninth's 'Mech units to escape.[7] Tai-sa Graham was saved by a member of the armor battalion and was able to coordinate the retreat. However, Tai-sa Graham prioritized his BattleMechs and sacrificed many of his aerospace fighters, infantry, and combat armor units to allow two battalions of 'Mechs to escape. The DCMS was not pleased, though Tai-sa Graham enjoyed strong political support and was not seriously threatened with repercussions.[8] In the chaos of the Clan Invasion, ComStar reported the Ninth as destroyed,[9] though this was seemingly in error.
Third Battalion of the Ninth's infantry regiment had been stationed on Schuyler and so escaped the annihilation on Schwartz only to fall before the Seventh Jaguar Dragoons four months later.[10][11]

Dominion War[edit]
During the Dominion War, the Ninth Pesht Regulars were posted to Idlewind and were one of the first commands hit by the Ghost Bear forces. Their commanding officer was killed early in the fighting and the Ninth lost all unit cohesion. More than 90% of the unit's soldiers were killed, and the remaining troops were assigned to other commands to make up personnel losses.[2]

Tactics[edit]
Star League Era[edit]
As a regiment within the Pesht Regulars, the Ninth was primarily trained in garrisoning pacified areas, conducting operations to dig insurgents and rebels out of urban areas, and frontal assaults against prepared defenses.[1]
Succession Wars Era[edit]
In 3025 the unit has no specialty.[14]
Clan Invasion[edit]
Tai-sa Graham used his infantry and armor resources as "bait" for enemy units, which were then hit by the regiment's 'Mechs. This understandably caused tension between the different elements of the unit.[8]

Color Scheme and Insignia[edit]
The Ninth Pesht Regulars used a white color scheme with heavy jade green accents.[8] The District Regulars insignia is a green dragon encircling a planet, and the Ninth Pesht placed the district insignia on their 'Mech's right arm. Few Pesht Regular regiments maintained their own insignia, instead modifying the District insignia with their regimental number designation if desired. Pesht District Regular ‘Mechs place the Kurita Dragon crest on the upper left leg.[14][20][21]
Around the year 3058, the Ninth adopted a motto painted on aerospace fighters and flown as a banner on all other vehicles. The motto, rendered in Japanese hiragana script, translates as “pride before a fall.”[8]
Notes[edit]
On page 65 of the NAIS The Fourth Succession War Military Atlas Volume 2, it is clearly stated that "Beta" and "Charlie" Companies of the Second Battalion are involved in the scenario, but the table on page 109 shows the Ninth marks its Companies numerically.
