Overview[edit]
Operation STILETTO was a campaign conducted by mercenary forces on behalf of General Motors and Johnston Industries. Two task forces struck at Acamar and Genoa, worlds within what had become known as the Chaos March, intending to help stabilize the region enough to facilitate continued trade.[1]
Preparations[edit]
Forces working for the liberation taskforce would deploy at the end of 3060 to start investigationg the planet's defenders, locations, deployments, and anything of tactical relevance.[2]
Task Force Acamar[edit]
The work from Task Force Acamar did not just end after the Battle of Acamar and the election of a new Acamar Parliament.[3]
Just days after the new government had been formed, it informed Anton Corrigan that they had lost with several mining sites in the Acamar's outlying regions. Several teams were assembled to investigate, with five of them turning up pirate activity at each of the main mining sites. The prisiones were members of one of the larger bands that had been operating on Acamar, and all of them pointed to a pirate band commanded by a man known as Imhaus that had not been known to operate in system. As no more information had been found, those teams were ordered to return planet except two of them. Luck was on the Task Force side when one DropShip detected stray transmissions originating from the Illeudian Asteroid Belt. They were sent to investigate them, which ended in the Battle of Illeudian.[4]
There were still pirates in system and when Task Forces Acamars started after the return of the search parties in the outer planetary system, Corrigan switched most of the mercenary contracts to the garrison side while a few were assigned to hunt the remaining on planet pirates. Those forces were able to finish most of the pirates, but two of them were able to escape during a huge storm that formed end of July 3061.[5] Thanks to this they were able to reach the outskirts of the city of Huss and push the defending forces out of the city. This 29th of July marked the first time forces belonging to the Second Provisional Acamar Cavalry appeared moving to secure Huss' warehouse district.[6] Once the pirates bypassed the mercenary defenses they directly went to the warehouse district ignoring other important targets. Once there they called a column of trucks and cargo carriers to join them in the warehouse district. The mercenaries regrouped and got support by the few loyal Second Provisional Acamar Cavalry that had survived the sabotage from a few defectors. Once they got their supplies, they left the city. Pro-Liao activist took this opportunity to shout out against the taskforce units.[7] After the raid, the pirates dissapeared. Corrigan had to order a regiment of BattleMechs and a Wing to search for the pirates. It took some time as weather did not help, but finally the new base of the pirates was located high in the Sorrow Mountains. The base was heavily fortified, with few routes leading to it. Corrigan forces blockaded the base and for two weeks barely proved their defenses. Then a DropShip that was inbound to Kalskag changed course dramatically and directed itself to the pirated base. Seeing this, the Task Force units assaulted the three main roads that lead to the pirate base.[8] Though Corrigan's forces took a beating, they finally reached the pirate's base. The pirates retreated to their DropShip, that he had landed a few kilometers from there, and blown the pass behind them.[9] It is not known how many of this pirates escaped.[citation needed]
This was the last big battle. All pirate forces had been either destroyed or escaped. At the end of the invasion's twenty ninth week Corrigan declared the planet free. Mid August Corrigan left the planet, leaving GM and FedCom representatives plus around a quarter of the mercenary forces that remained as garrison troops (one regiment strong).[9]
The evolution of the situation on planet ended boiling up with division between the non-committed citizens and the Liaoist supporters that ended in a coup by Liaoist supporters. This led to what could be described as the Second Battle of Acamar.[10]
