Operation TRIUMVIR was a joint invasion of the newly formed Free Worlds League by the Regulan Fiefs, Duchy of Andurien and Magistracy of Canopus in 3146.[2]

Background[edit]

The Free Worlds League and, prior to its reformation, its various member-states (particularly the Oriente Protectorate) had clashed with Regulus and Andurien over the years, notably foiling Regulus' attempt to recreate the League as its leading member rather than Oriente.[3] By 3146 Regulan Fiefs leader Lester Cameron-Jones had negotiated an agreement with his counterparts in Andurien and Canopus to mount a triple-pronged attack upon their mutual foe. The assassination of Captain-General Jessica Marik's husband Philip Hughes in August 3146 provided the triple alliance with a convenient window of opportunity to hit the League as its leadership was focused on the tragedy.[4]

Operation TRIUMVIR[edit]

The Regulan part of TRIUMVIR was aimed at its hated Oriente rival, striking at four systems: Sophie's World, Kyeinnisan, Jouques and Dalton. With the First Orloff Grenadiers pinned down on the first two worlds, the Fourteenth Regulan Hussars were able to seize Emris IV and the StarCorps facility there. The Duchy of Andurien attacked Oriente as well two weeks after the Regulan assault, focusing on Oriente's rimward border and driving League defenders from Kwamashu, El Giza and Mosiro. The Magistracy attacked the Rim Commonality, swiftly taking Tellman's Mistake and Glevakha and then digging in. The expected counterattacks took place ten days later, but bogged down in stalemate as neither military could gain an advantage.[4]

Jessica Marik's seclusion hampered the League response, but Warden-General Nikol Marik was able to enact two contingency plans. By early October the first had borne fruit: the Fourth Marik Protectors agreed to serve the League and then drove Regulan forces from Jouques. The second plan entailed raiding against key Regulan industries on Wallis and Clipperton, forcing the Regulan military to withdraw from all Oriente worlds save Emris IV. That world's 'Mech production capabilities were too valuable for Regulus to leave without a fight, but a ferocious Steel Wolves attack mauled the garrison and drove the survivors off-world.[4]

By the end of the year Kwamashu had been returned to League control while the Magistracy had been driven from the Rim Commonality. Duke Ari Humphreys of Andurien requested a cessation of hostilities, satisfied with taking two worlds from the League, and his allies were forced to do so as well.[4]

Aftermath[edit]

Relations between Regulus and Andurien cooled markedly after TRIUMVIR's end, with Cameron-Jones blaming his erstwhile ally for the operation's overall failure. The Free Worlds League, on the other hand, celebrated its victory, with its members believing they had at last grown into a true nation and an interstellar power.[4]

The following year, Captain-General Marik emerged from her isolation and arranged for a retaliatory assault upon the Regulan Fiefs. The ensuing war and economic blockade of the Fiefs ended with that realm defeated and reincorporated into the Free Worlds League.[5] [6]
