Description[edit]
A variant of the venerable Overlord class DropShip radical enough to be considered a new ship class unto its own, the Overlord A3 (sometimes spelled with a dash, Overlord-A3) was developed in 3058 as a WarShip escort. The A3 completely removes the 'Mech bays, freeing up space and weight to boost the armor, weaponry and structure to Pocket WarShip standards. The reinforced armor could stand up to the firepower of WarShips, while the capital-class missile launchers made any foe pause before engaging the A3. A larger interplanetary drive system provided and Overlord A3 with a higher thrust rating.[5]
The reconfiguration from a 'Mech carrier to a Pocket WarShip also saw the vessel's fuselage enlarged, by adding 5 meters to the "length" (from bottom to nose) and 3.8 meters to the ovoid shape's diameter. However, it was still possible to convert an existing standard Overlord to Overlord A3 specifications as demonstrated by Earthwerks Limited in 3065 with the Baleful Gelos.[1]
The A3 proved its worth in several Federated Commonwealth Civil War battles, including a sacrificial run to ensure the escape of the FCS Melissa Davion with Victor Steiner-Davion aboard above Tikonov, and the closing naval battle over New Avalon when a pair of A3s successfully blocked the involvement of a loyalist Fox-class corvette.[5]
Armament[edit]
The A3 performs its anti-warship duties with eleven ER PPCs, twelve Gauss rifles and ER Large Lasers, sixteen medium lasers, four Artemis-enhanced LRM-20s, four Large Pulse Lasers and ten Medium Pulse Lasers. Most notably, the A3 carries two AR-10 capital missile launchers and a massive teleoperated Kraken-T launcher in its nose.[5]
Cargo[edit]
The A3 retains the fighter bays of the base Overlord while adding berths for a platoon of battle armor space marines.[5]
- Bay 1: Aerospace Fighters (6), 3 doors
- Bay 2: Battle Armor (3 squads), 1 door
- Bay 3: Cargo (515 tons), 2 doors
Variants[edit]
- Overlord A3A
- Developed alongside the A3, this version replaces the Kraken-T missile launcher with another AR-10. It carries ten Gauss rifles, eleven ER PPCs, twelve ER Large Lasers, twelve medium lasers, four LRM-20s with Artemis, four Large Pulse Lasers, ten Medium Pulse Lasers, a Screen Launcher, and four Laser AMS. This variant of the Overlord cannot carry any marines or battle armor, but does carry six fighters. BV (2.0) = 18,624[6]
