Plot Summary[edit]
The story is told from the perspective of Major Shinto Kubusaka, the commanding officer of the Fighting Intellectuals mercenary command, who is engaged in a battle with a mixed battalion of Lyran Alliance forces on Kandersteg, shortly after the end of the FedCom Civil War. What was meant as a simple objective raid for the Intellectuals turns rapidly into a slugfest against superior enemy forces, which has already cost Kubusaka three 'Mechs and two aerospace fighters. Upon realizing that the Intellectuals have no chance to accomplish their mission in the face of heavily fortified defenders, Kubusaka gives the general order to abort the mission and retreat to the DropShip. Already on the retreat, Kubusaka grapples with the core challenges of a mercenary unit after each mission: paying the troops, burying the dead, making repairs and finding more work. As for finding more work, Kubusaka is not concerned though, because he knows that something always comes up.
