Under the management of the original Star League's Department of Education and Information, Prometheus Inc. was a government-owned company dedicated to the publication of books and the management of libraries across the entire Star League, most notably maintaining the mammoth Prometheus Database, the single most important information system of the Star League era.[1]
Overview[edit]
Named for the Greek god who gave mankind fire against the wishes of the other gods, Prometheus Inc. published pro-Star League books to promote peace and understanding among its citizens and the member states, also building and administrating almost 1,000 libraries through the Star League. On top of the physical media located in these libraries, each also maintained a connection to the Prometheus Database. Like many key aspects of the Terran Hegemony and Star League governments, Prometheus Inc. and its libraries would be destroyed during the Amaris Coup and the early Succession War era.[1]
The Prometheus Database[edit]
A vast and extensive information service located on Terra, the Prometheus Database was connected to each of the libraries maintained by Promethus Inc. and freely available to anyone who visited them. Additionally any party who had a personal computer could also connect to the database. The destruction of the Prometheus Database was arguably one of the most grievous losses inflicted by Stefan Amaris's troops during the Coup,[1] with even ComStar being unable recover all the data from the shattered remains. As the Inner Sphere slid into the era of LosTech, numerous researchers would dream of even recovering a fragment of the Prometheus Database, discovering a complete copy being considered akin to the quest for the Holy Grail.[2]
During the collapse of the Star League, the hardline Believers of the Cult of the Saints Cameron would setup secret caches that would contain memory cores containing fragments of the Prometheus Database that they jealously hoarded and guarded.[3] The single most important and significant fragment of the Prometheus Database yet uncovered was the Helm Memory Core, which while incomplete undid much of the technological decline of the Succession Wars.[2][4] The New Dallas Memory Core was another notable though more limited fragment, most specifically focused on military hardware.[2][5]
The Clans as the descendants of the Star League Defense Force retained even greater volume of information taken from the Prometheus Database. During the IlClan era and the third iteration of the Star League, when Clan Sea Fox was given control of Bureau of Star League Affairs as of 1 February 3152 they drafted plans for their Scientist Caste to begin developing a new Prometheus Database. Though specifically intending that it contain information and knowledge to help entice the leaders of the Great Houses to consider joining the new Star League to be able to access, Khan Mori Hawker also noted that they would have to carefully ensure that it would not include any information that could used against the Sea Foxes.[6]
