Raul Coburn was the commanding officer of the Dismal Disinherited during the War of 3039.[1]

During the first wave of the War of 3039, General Coburn's First and Second Dismal Disinherited Regiments aided in the Federated Suns' conquest of Huan. When the First Disinherited received orders to leave the Second as a garrison force while they proceeded to invade Igualada, Coburn provided Colonel Neamiah Stockl with some assistance in fortifying the world before departing on 12 July.[1] Coburn received orders from New Avalon to hold his position on 25 July, although he decided to continue crushing Igualada's planetary militia rather than risk his men through inaction. When Coburn announced to New Avalon that Igualada was pacified and ready for occupation, he was first told to withdraw before his protests earned a second message unequivocally ordering his return to the Federated Suns.[2]
When Coburn returned to Huan with the First and Third Dismal Disinherited to pick up the Second Disinherited, he discovered Stockl's troops surrounded in the city of Sellan by the Thirty-second Galedon Regulars and Second Night Stalkers. Coburn proceeded to drop his forces directly on top of the enemy's positions, forcing the Combine into retreat and capturing several hundred prisoners at the cost of high Disinherited casualties. Recall orders from New Avalon arrived soon afterwards and Coburn commanded all FedSuns units to leave Huan, although Stockl's performance in defending the planet had earned the Combine's respect and facilitated the freeing of all POWs before the Dismal Disinherited departed on 25 September.[1] While Coburn's stopover on Huan initially earned him a reprimand for disobeying his orders to withdraw completely, Field Marshal Ardan Sortek removed the black mark upon hearing the full story of the Second Disinherited's rescue. After complimenting Coburn's men for their service to the Federated Suns, Sortek arranged personal meetings between Coburn, First Prince Hanse Davion, and Field Marshal James Sandoval in order to smooth over any lingering recriminations.[2]
