Until Rayner's generation, House von Schetzle was a Lyran military family, each generation serving the Lyran state directly. Rayner instead became a mercenary, as would his son Deimos.[2]
On 27 October 3067, Rayner, aboard his famed and feared DropShip the Linz, assigned Eric Nagel the duty of investigating the defeat of the Bloody Stoats, a mercenary unit led by Deimos, on Phobos, a planetoid in the Gienah system. Nagel was to determine what truly happened, as opposed to the claims by the Lyran Alliance and Free Worlds League, and whether or not Deimos survived.[1]

As of 3067, Rayner was thin and clean-shaven, with dark eyes, short cropped salt-and-pepper hair and well-manicured hands.[1]
