Description[edit]
Produced by Leopard Armor for the Word of Blake, the Red Shift is one of many new BattleMechs being fielded by the Word of Blake Militia. The Red Shift is designed to spot for the Padilla artillery tank also built by Leopard Armor, with its TAG target designator. Built on a lightweight Leopard Mark I endo steel chassis and is powered by a GM 180 XL extralight engine that pushes the 'Mech's top speed up to 151.2 km/h. To give the 'Mech the ability to protect itself from advanced electronic warfare systems, the Red Shift has a Guardian ECM suite, and for protection from conventional weapons the Red Shift has four tons of Star Slab/1 ferro-fibrous armor.[5]
Weapons and Equipment[edit]
To protect itself from most other light 'Mechs, vehicles, and infantry the Red Shift carries two Tronel XII Medium Pulse Lasers. To dissipate the 'Mech's scant waste heat, the Red Shift is outfitted with 10 double heat sinks.[5]
Variants[edit]
- RDS-2B
- Almost identical to the standard version of the Red Shift introduced in 3063,[6] the 2B is modified to find hidden enemy units by removing the Guardian ECM suite and replacing it with a Beagle active probe.[1] BV (1.0) = 485,[3] BV (2.0) = 555[7][6]
- RDS-3A
- This variant, developed in 3068,[8] replaces the Guardian ECM suite and TAG with an improved C3 computer and the medium pulse lasers have been replaced with four ER medium lasers. BV (2.0) = 869[9][8]
Design Quirks[edit]
The Red Shift has the following Design Quirks:[10]
Notes[edit]
- One of the first Red Shifts seen in combat was an apparently single unit serving on planet Outreach in 3068. Nicknamed "Red" by their adversaries, the guerrilla forces of Wolf's Dragoons on planet, it was a quick and swift harasser, skirmishing with them, directing artillery fire on them, leading them into traps; only when the main force was evacuated was it destroyed, killing the pilot.[11]
- In German products, the unit's proper name was altered to Roter Blitz, which means Red Flash. The model code was accordingly changed to RTB-2A.
