Richard Frenders was a senior Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces officer at the start of the Third Succession War.[1]

Frenders was stationed on Kessel, when the Draconis Combine invaded at the start of the Third Succession War, causing Frenders to retreat off world with his forces. In an interview with Frenders published in Military Transcripts: Year 2869, he provided a justification for his retreat, insisting he was "just advancing in the opposite direction".[1]

Frenders' quote is a reference to Oliver P. Smith, a Korean War General, who explained his retreat during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir by saying "Retreat Hell! We're just attacking in another direction".
