Robert McShane was a Federated Suns officer during the Dark Age Era involved into the Draconis Reach Campaign.

History[edit]

McShane enlisted into the AFFS about 3099, serving under Harrison Davion service. After about four decades of service, he ended commanding the Federated Suns garrison on Marlowe's Rift, in the Draconis Reach, with the rank of Colonel. There, he led the Militia effectively, defending the planet against Draconis Combine raids, and even launched some to other worlds with his forces, when he was able to.[2]

On 14 February 3139, he led his militia to defend the planet against what he believed to be another kuritan raid. He led his forces to a narrow pass, where he made his men to build defenses. The attackers, however, were much more powerful than expected. After suffering heavy losses, McShane ordered his men to retreat to defend the capital, while he stayed behind to cover their retreat, as some of his men. He fought a duel against a Guillotine IIC, but was unable to win. All his men were downed, one after another, and his 'Mech blowned. He managed to eject, but was captured. Then he uncovered than the attackers were Wolf's Dragoons, contracted by the Combine to conquer the Reach.[3]

Two days after being captured, the Dragoons' convoy which carried him and other prisoners was attacked by a group of militiamen and he lost consciousness. He awoke in a DropShip which was abandoning the planet. Despite the fact he didn't want to leave, finally accepted, though he swore to came back.[4]

On 22 March, McShane was on Wapakoneta, where he met the baron Marcus Palm, with a regiment of the March Militia. Palm was tasked to fully integrate the Reach into the Suns by the Duke of Robinson. He asked McShane a report about the Battle of Marlowe's Rift (3139) and promoted him to the rank of General before assigning him the task of defend the Reach against the Combine's invasion. However, when the Dragoons attacked there the 13 April, the baron had to order the retreat to save his troops.[1]

McShane stayed on Palm two months before Duke Sandoval allowed him to return to the Reach. He was on Misery the 2 June, when a raid of a company of the Ryuken-go was destroyed by a battalion of the Tenth Avalon Hussars. Its commander, Colonel Matthew Ford refused to listen his advices, so the General gave orders preparing for when began the real attack, before retreating to Udibi.[5]

Eventually, McShane was defeated again on Udibi, and by the end of the year, all the Reach layed into Combine's hands. Then he was sent to Glenmora. The ISF took his presence as proof than the Suns were to push back to the Reach, which made the Dragoons attack it, beginning the Battle of Glenmora (3140). There, McShane led the defense against the trapped Dragoons, until 14 August. That day, when the Suns' forces were to crush the Dragoons, the arrival of the Ryuken changed it all. He made all what was possible to save the Marshal Harmon Forrest, but he was wounded. The 3 September, he and Forrest meet with the Dragoons' Colonel Henry Kincaid, the pilot of the Guillotine IIC which he had fought on Marlowe's Rift, and Tori Ishihara, both of which wanted to meet him before departing offworld. Unlike Forrest, he wasn't aggresive or concerned, being respectful with their winners. When Kincaid asked him about that, he simply said he had fought his war.[6]
