Planetary History[edit]

Age of War[edit]

Kwangjong-ni was settled in 2335. The first wave of colonists were primarily from Terra's Korean peninsula, with Scandinavians and North Americans later forming significant minorities. The young world attracted attention from Pirates and nearby proto-states as it grew. Escalating security concerns caused planetary authorities to reach out to neighboring powers for protection. The Rim Worlds Republic managed to prevail over the Tamar Pact by offering a larger garrison while requesting considerably fewer resources in exchange, securing Kwangjong-ni's loyalty.[3]

The first two centuries of membership in the Republic saw Kwangjong-ni prosper. The Rim Worlder garrison was easily able to repel raids and project power into the region that was rapidly becoming the Finmark Province. The Republic's good relations with the Tamar Pact and later Lyran Commonwealth during this period meant that the world could focus on steadily growing its population and an economy based on fishing and manufacturing marine equipment[3]

Reunification War[edit]

By the outbreak of the Reunification War, Kwangjong-ni's population was around 50 million and the planet way comfortably self-sufficient.[3] Civil war erupted in the Rim Worlds Republic in 2575, with the factions polarized around those loyal to First Consul Gregory Amaris and those loyal to the Rift Republican Army and the Rim Provisional Government.[38] Kwangjong-ni's garrison declared for the RPG, but the civilian population was largely unconcerned with who prevailed on distant Apollo. For the first decade of the war, Kwangjong-ni was quiet and life continued as normal.[3]

The Star League eventually decided to intervene in the civil war in support of Gregory Amaris, and in 2579 assembled a multinational force headed by the Star League Defense Force to help secure Amaris' control over the Rim Worlds Republic.[39] At first the League's entry into the war was beneficial for Kwangjong-ni, as more troops in their region scared away pirates and increased the demand for their food exports. Eventually though the blockades, restrictions and disruptions caused by the invasion caused the world to become isolated.[3] Assigned to the conquest of Kwangjong-ni in 2588 was all three regiments from the Lyran Auxiliary Corps: the Tamar Tigers, the Twenty-fifth Skye Rangers and the Fourth Royal Guards. The Star League forces successfully took control of Kwangjong-ni, defeating the local militia and partisan forces, and all three LCAF units remained in place on the planet until they were redeployed for the invasion of Luanda in 2590.[40] The Lyrans struggled to pacify Kwangjong-ni despite there being only few partisans on world due to difficulty fighting at sea, and left considerably behind schedule.[3]

Star League[edit]

Star League occupation proved beneficial in the long term for Kwangjong-ni's economy, introducing new building materials that were able to weather the world's frequent and severe storms. Free from the constant building and rebuilding that had characterized life on Kwangjong-ni before the League, the economy grew rapidly. The population expanded nearly tenfold during the Star League era, with megacities sprouting along the worlds coasts and in some cases extending deep below the waves. The planets ecology was protected during this economic boom by shifting from fishing to aquaculture.[3]

After the Republic's government stabilizied under Cynthia Amaris, her husband Stefan Gorienko selected Kwangjong-ni to be the site of a secret BattleMech factory due to his mistaken belief that the LCAF's struggles in conquering the world during the Reunification War indicated its population was exceptionally patriotic. Weigel Armory and Munitions was constructed under the sea in order to disperse its heat signature and connected to the Republican garrison in the Britton Mountains via an exceptionally long tunnel. Workers were brought in from off-world to maintain secrecy, while units rotating off world with additional mechs and ammunition was used to disguise the factory's output.[3] Despite the secrecy of this project, rumors of the facility leaked out. The Star League Defense Force sent the 111th Light Horse Regiment to Kwangjong-ni to follow up on rumors of an illegal BattleMech manufacturing facility, but they found nothing.[41]

The growing desperation of the Republic during the Amaris Civil War caused security to lapse and the SLDF to finally discover Kwangjong-ni's strategic importance. The SLDF invaded the world during the earliest stages in their conquest of the Republic. The SLDF faced fierce resistance, but the defenders were ultimately unable to hold longer than a few weeks. The SLDF seized significant amounts of war material before abandoning the world to launch their reconquest of the Terran Hegemony.[41]

The facility would fall into disuse and disrepair after the Republic's collapse during Republic-Commonwealth War 27732775 where Kwangjong-ni was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth.[1][14] The LCAF initially faced no resistance on Kwangjong-ni, but were later counterattacked by Republic holdouts attempting to recapture the factory. After struggling to take and hold the tunnel network connecting it to the garrison, Republic forces detonated a nuclear weapon to collapse them and deny the Commonwealth access to Weigel's production.[3]

Clan Invasion[edit]

Operation REVIVAL caused Kwangjong-ni to resurface from backwater obscurity. The Commonwealth reduced the world's garrison in order to rotate troops to the invasion corridor, while the world's position just far enough from the front to be out of danger caused the world to become an important source of food the Lyran war effort. The combination of increased prosperity and decreased security caused piracy to become a major concern once again.[3]

The Jihad[edit]

In 3062, lostech prospectors stumbled upon an exhaust vent leading into the long-forgotten Weigel plant and retrieved a lance of Rampage assualt mechs. The salvagers attempted to sell the mechs to Defiance Industries. Realizing the opportunity the find represented DI reps instead paid the prospectors ten times the mechs value in exchange for the location of their find and transfer of any claim they had to its ownership.[3]

Defiance Industries spent considerable sums to bring the undersea facility back online. Acting as a production site for the company's secretive R&D efforts, the Kwangjong-ni plant had three easily reconfigurable production lines which reached full production capacity during the Jihad, helping to offset the loss of Hesperus II to the Blakists. To protect it from both attack and prying eyes, the plant's actual location was kept top secret. Large cargo subs carried needed parts in and finished designs out was the only method of reaching the factory, with the subs' home port heavily defended by the planet's militia.[1][42] The export of war material increased piratical attention even further, but a policy of deliberately intermixing shipments of mechs with comparatively valueless fish meant few were able to make a profit raiding the system's interstellar trade.[3]

Dark Age[edit]

In 3148, Kwangjong-ni's populace grew increasingly concerned as the pirates of the Rim Territories annexed nearby systems. Defiance Industries prepared its holdings on the planet for any hostile activity.[43]

Military Deployment[edit]

Geography[edit]

Kwangjong-ni, among planets, stood out for its oceans. Although the planet's seas were the site of constant storms, the plentiful ocean life supplied both most of the planet's own food and its primary export, luxury seafood.[47]

The world's three main continents are named Atlantis, Kwan-ti, and Saipon.[1] The world's inhabitants mostly live on Atlantis. Kwan-ti is uninhabitable due to heavy metals in its soil but visited by farmers every few months to harvest citrus fruits. Saipon's location at the world's south pole means it is similarly reduced to hosting the occasional outpost. Many islands in the equatorial New Nouveau Caledonia chain were host to resorts for the wealthy and powerful during the Star League era.[3]

Planetary Locations[edit]

  • Britton Mountain Chain: host of a major Rim Worlds Republic military base and adjacent to the Lost Sea[3]
  • Landry: the planetary capital city located on Atlantis[1][47]
  • Lost Sea: secret location; home to the Defiance Industries Manufacturing Annex and planetary militia[1][47]
