Scourge Plague

Scourge Plague,[1] also known as Brinton Plague,[2] was a virulent and incurable virus which was released on the Taurian Concordat world of Brinton in 3018 following damage to a biological weapons storage bunker.[1]

Overview[edit]

The Scourge virus is extremely adaptive, and attacks the nervous system, causing dementia and extreme paranoia. The virus is also known to cause severe brain damage and eventual death within 36 to 48 hours of the first signs of infection, at least in populations without immunity.[1] As of 3067 the virus remained incurable.[1][2]

History[edit]

The virus was initially designed as a biological weapon during or before the Rim Rebellion era, after which it was placed in storage on Brinton. The storage bunkers were however damaged in 3018 during a Capellan Confederation raid, resulting in a release of the virus, which as of the 3060s was unable to be contained other than via planetary quarantine.

On Brinton in the 3060s the virus could be found in lethal quantities over 85 percent of the planet’s air and water supply, though by that time the surviving natives of Brinton had developed a resistance to the virus. Four out of five citizens remained carriers.[1]

The virus has escaped quarantine due to pirate raids, with for example the Dedrickson's Devils spreading it to the world of Aea,[2] and a further escape on the pirate Calderon's Commando DropShip Walla Walla only being prevented by its destruction on the ground after the crew started showing symptoms.[1]
