Second Chance is a short story by Christopher Hussey that was published as introductory fiction for Era Report: 3052.
Plot Summary[edit]
On 17 May 3050, during the Clan Invasion of the Inner Sphere, Överste Joannie Swigard of the First Hussars prepares to resist a renewed attack by Clan Ghost Bear forces on Thule. Forced into hiding during the initial invasion, the First Hussars had retaken Thule after the Ghost Bear front-line forces moved on. Anticipating a return, Swigard and her troops fortified a defensive position known as the "Icebox", a vast abandoned mine complex.
saKhan Theresa DelVillar, who leads the Ghost Bear counter-invasion. personally leads a Trinary of 'Mechs and Elementals in order to crush the Hussars' resistance. As the Ghost Bears advance, the Hussars initiate a coordinated retreat, using artillery and traps to funnel the enemy into the "Icebox" for a final stand. Despite initial success in ambushing the Ghost Bears, the Hussars suffer heavy losses due to the ferocity of the Clan forces, particularly their Elementals. Swigard's attempt to turn the battle in her favor begins to fail as the Hussars' line collapses under an assault led by DelVillar and her elite troops.
Ultimately, Swigard's Hunchback is overwhelmed and she's severely wounded. When she regains consciousness, she is surrounded by enemy 'Mechs. Confronted by DelVillar, Swigard is taken captive and declared a bondsman of Clan Ghost Bear.
