Planetary History[edit]
Early History[edit]
At some point prior to 2231, Smolensk was the site of the infamous "Smolensk Incident" in which a crowd of protestors were fired on by Colonial Marines.[42] The protests came during a drought,[42] and the order to fire on the protestors was presumably issued by Rear-Admiral Emil Varnay, the Military Commander on Smolensk at the time. However, the exact detail of what happened is unclear; as Military Commander, Varnay would have been subject to the orders of Alliance Colonial Office Representative Heinicke, but Heinicke committed suicide on Smolensk. Varnay was rendered a controversial figure, dubbed the "Sadist of Smolensk" by some, and painted as some kind of monster or beast, but may in fact simply have been a rigid disciplinarian unwilling or unable to see beyond the need to obey orders. Whatever the truth, Varnay was redeployed to serve as Governor-General of New Avalon as a last chance posting, and remains a controversial historical figure today.[1]
Davion Civil War[edit]
During the Davion Civil War, Smolensk was aligned with David and Cassandra Varnay, the rulers of the Capellan March. When Cassandra's forces captured General John Gordon on Jaipur in 2533 and executed him for "war crimes," along with the majority of the troops captured with him,[43][44] it marked the beginning of an escalating cycle of savagery between the various factions involved in the Civil War. Gordon had been one of First Prince Alexander Davion's first supporters and the senior officer on the Capellan front of Alexander's campaign; a battalion of troops on Smolensk loyal to Alexander responded to the news of the massacre by going on a brutal rampage, attacking industries and cities alike.[43][44]
In 2537, as Cassandra Varnay's forces captured numerous Crucis March worlds and moved to within striking distance of New Avalon itself, the Prince of the Terran March, Dmitri Rostov, assembled a large army on Smolensk, which he committed to a joint campaign with forces loyal to Alexander, aimed at cutting off Cassandra's forces in the Crucis March.[43][45]
