Tactical Operations: Advanced Rules expands the BattleTech core rules of Total Warfare or the BattleMech Manual with optional additional rules. Amongst others, the book offers more extensive rules for movement as well as for combat, exotic environments, artillery, minefields and crew morale. Another major part are the game and design rules for complex structures.
Tactical Operations: Advanced Rules was released alongside Tactical Operations: Advanced Units & Equipment, that covers advanced weapons and equipment as well as the rules for large support vehicles, inclusive the corresponding construction rules.

- The artwork used on the cover of Tactical Operations: Advanced Rules is a cropped version of the cover art originally used on CityTech, Second Edition.
- Together with Tactical Operations: Advanced Units & Equipment, the content of Tactical Operations: Advanced Rules made up the book, Tactical Operations. But in June of 2020 it was split in two, because it was deemed to be too long with over 400 pages.
