From the Sarna interview with the designer, Josh Derksen, https://www.sarna.net/news/battletech-aces-tommy-josh-lynnvander-studios/ "But more than just having an automated opponent, I felt very strongly that because BattleTech is such a narrative-driven game—given the universe and all of its sourcebooks—it would be weird to make an automated opponent that didn’t also have a narrative campaign to play it against so that you could actually gather all your friends and play a series of adventures as if you are playing through a BattleTech novel."
