Corporation InfoBox[edit]

I am trying the Corporation Infobox to see how it looks on one of these pages. I think it does look better on the whole, but if we are going to do this for RL Corps/Orgs, I think it needs its own infobox/template.

  • No place for a company URL. (We have them for Authors.)
  • The color-coding and title create a possibility of confusion with In-Universe Corporations. (Though we have that even without the infobox, we want it clear.)
  • We may want other fields that are not in the existing one, though I am not sure which ones. Open to discussion.

So please do not copy this for others, let's discuss.--Talvin (talk) 10:07, 12 July 2022 (EDT)

Quick add: let's use the same color-code as for Category:PeopleReal--Talvin (talk) 10:18, 12 July 2022 (EDT)
Talvin, I think that the notion of a infobox for real life corporations or publishing houses makes sense. Regarding the color coding, I don't have a strong opinion, but I think the color code for real-life people makes natural sense. (It was what I thought when you mentioned the color coding issue in your list above. So we are thinking alike there.) Here are the other fields that may make sense to include (with credit to wikipedia for some inspiration here):
  • Suggest using "Founded" rather than "Year Founded". This would allow for use of simply the year, but also year and month if that precision is known.
  • A better term for "Year of Dissolution", perhaps "Time when operations ended". Don't have a 'perfect' one to suggest yet. maybe "Dissolved" or "Ended", again choose field to permit a more precise reckoning of time of end rather than forcing one ot only track the year. Wikipedia uses "Defunct".
  • Successor corporation, or perhaps an ending status. Some companies go bankrupt. Some get bought out. Some merge. Some simply rebrand. So an indication of how it ended would be relevant. Wikipedia uses "Fate" to give a brief blurb about a company's status e.g., "Acquired by Corp XYZ in 19NN", "Bankruptcy", "Shut down operations". So I suggest "Fate" and "Successor" as optional fields.
  • An (optional) field called "Parent".
  • An (optional) field called "Subsidiaries".
These are some initial thoughts. Hopefully others have further food for thought to add. --Dude RB (talk) 21:48, 12 July 2022 (EDT)
The original corporation infobox has a parent corporation section, and sorta a subsiduary one in the form of Divisions. Help:CreateCorporationArticle. I agree that a dedicated infobox is the way to go... And the colour coding for real life stuff should be the same or at least a similar shade.--Dmon (talk) 22:03, 12 July 2022 (EDT)
It has been my experience that having too many fields in an infobox just creates more chaos someone else has to clean up, so let's try for the minimum we need for something like this. "Ceased Operation" strikes me as a reasonable field name. For the successors and so forth: that doesn't necessarily imply they got the license that is relevant to our Wiki, so I am not as concerned about that. It can be handled better in the narrative.--Talvin (talk) 08:21, 13 July 2022 (EDT)
I am curious what infoboxes you think cause chaos. The 'Mech infobox is a bleeding mess that I intend to beat to within an inch of its life at some point and the battles one lacks clarity of purpose, but other than that most of them are pretty good I think.--Dmon (talk) 08:27, 13 July 2022 (EDT)
Mech comes to mind, yes, and I think I may have stumbled across some legacy ones not changed over yet for others.--Talvin (talk) 08:29, 13 July 2022 (EDT)
Oh, and that existential dread that comes over me when I look at a Character Infobox and say "Khan! Rank? Position? Title? AIIIEEEEE!" but that is a distinct and specific issue.--Talvin (talk) 09:08, 13 July 2022 (EDT)
Aye, there is more than a few with various degrees of separation from the context (and in some cases content).
Thankfully once the new infobox fields are determined and those tied to Properties. It will be a very easy task to publish articles using simple forms to fill out the infoboxes. All I need to start this for any type of infobox is what Dmon has set in stone what he wants to go forward with. These sorts of talks are needed for consensus for them.— The preceding unsigned comment was posted by Deadfire (talkcontribs) .
