Description[edit]
The Tempest is a low-end heavy 'Mech that is built to pack a powerful punch. To make the most of the Tempest's available weight, the 'Mech is built on a Technicron Type H Endo Steel chassis and is propelled to its top speed of 64.8 km/h by a Magna 260 XL engine. These choices in materials save enough weight for the Tempest to carry a devastating arsenal that is powerful at long and short ranges. The 'Mech's mobility has also been enhanced with four Chilton 465 jump jets that make the Tempest capable of jumping up to one hundred and twenty meters. Finally, the Tempest carries twelve tons of armor which is a respectable amount of protection for a 65 ton 'Mech. Despite this protection, pilots do need to exercise some caution as they take damage as the 'Mech lacks CASE, leaving its fragile XL engine vulnerable.
Weapons and Equipment[edit]
For long range firepower, the Tempest carries a Zeus Slingshot Gauss rifle, which provides a devastating long-range punch. For medium to long ranges, the 'Mech has a Sutel Precision Line large pulse laser. When the 'Mech closes to short ranges, it brings its three Diplan M3 medium lasers and its Irian Weapons Works 60mm SRM-6 to bear on an enemy.
Variants[edit]
- TMP-3M2 Storm Tempest
- The 3M2 is seen as a major overhaul of the Tempest's arsenal. The 'Mech replaces the Gauss rifle with a light Gauss rifle, which gives it a longer effective range but deals less damage. The variant has also upgraded its medium lasers to ER medium lasers and the SRM-6 has been upgraded to a Streak SRM-6 launcher. Additionally, a double heat sink has been added, along with an ER small laser. Minor structural and electronic modifications complete the upgrade.[1] BV (1.0) = 1,406, BV (2.0) = 1,654[6]
- TMP-3G
- A straightforward variant, this version downgrades the SRM 6 to a SRM 4 and uses the extra ton to add another eight shots to the Gauss rifle. This reduction in firepower grants the MechWarrior enhanced endurance. BV (2.0) = 1,810 [7]
- TMP-4M
- Introduced in the 3130s this version retains the standard medium lasers and Gauss rifle of the 3M. It adds five improved jump jets and a snub nosed PPC to become a capable skirmisher.[8]
- Tempest C
- Produced by the Clan Protectorate this variant uses an Inner Sphere chassis and armour with a mix of Inner Sphere and Clan-spec weaponry. Three medium lasers are carried while a Clan large pulse laser and Gauss rifle are mounted in the left and right arms respectively. An ATM-9 launcher is mounted in the left torso, though with only two tons of ammunition the flexibility of the launcher is limited. As with all previous designs, no CASE has been fitted. [8]
Design Quirks[edit]
The Tempest has the following Design Quirk:[9]
Notes[edit]
- In German products, the unit's proper name was translated to Sturm. The model code was accordingly changed to STR-3M.
