Plot Summary[edit]
The story describes the final days of the Illyrian Palatinate seen through the eyes of attacker General Julius O'Reilly of the Marian Hegemony's II Legio Cataphracti, and defender Captain Eric Larsson of the mercenary unit Arms of Thor.
The story depicts how Julius O'Reilly (who compares himself with Julius Caesar, the Roman general) tries to win the war quickly and then goes on to make war against his father. He learns how to win the war from Eric Larsson – namely through bribery of the mercenary unit Cavanaugh's Cavalry, contracted by the defending Illyrians – and is able to succeed winning the war with that ace in his hand. Following the victory, O'Reilly is able to convince Eric Larsson to help him disempower his father.
