The Harder They Fall is a short story that was published as introductory fiction for Historical: War of 3039.
Plot Summary[edit]
On 13 August 3039, Chu-i James Fujimori, a MechWarrior of the Draconis Combine undertakes his first orbital combat drop onto the planet Telos IV. Encased in a DropPod, Fujimori descends from orbit in his Panther as part of an assault by the Forty-first Dieron Regulars against Federated Suns defenders at the DropPort of the planetary capital Triumph. The mission is a daring attempt to cut off the allied forces from their DropShips and supplies.
During reentry, Fujimori suffers space sickness and struggles to control the 'Mech through the various stages of atmospheric descent. As the DropPod opens its shell, he is attacked by an enemy Sparrowhawk aerospace fighter. Though damaged, his ’Mech survives the assault thanks in part to distraction from friendly aerospace forces.
With his 'Mech nearing the ground, Fujimori fires his jump jets to slow his fall. Despite a rough landing, his Panther remains fully operational. After regaining control, he directly heads toward the enemy lines to join the ground assault.
