The Heart That Beats With Emerald Fire is a short story by Philip A. Lee that was published as introductory fiction for ilClan.
Plot summary[edit]
On 31 January 3151, Star Captain Valyse of Clan Jade Falcon participates in a major assault on Mars, targeting Republic of the Sphere forces entrenched at the base of Olympus Mons. Piloting her Gyrfalcon BattleMech, Valyse leads her Trinary of the Ninth Talon Cluster in an attack, employing the aggressive Mongol Doctrine to overwhelm the enemy defenses.
The Jade Falcons descend the slopes of Olympus Mons under light gravity, encountering heavy resistance from Stone's Defenders. Despite taking losses, including the temporary fall of Star Commander David Pryde, Valyse presses forward without halt, striking at several units along the Republic line. She executes a flanking maneuver that disrupts the enemy's formation and helps create a breakthrough. During the assault, Valyse encounters a heavily armed Malice. After a brief engagement, her Gyrfalcon is disabled mid-jump and crashes. Preparing for a last stand, Valyse is unexpectedly rescued by Star Commander Pryde, who returns with his damaged Eyrie and destroys the Malice.
The story ends with Valyse climbing aboard Pryde's 'Mech, observing the battlefield as Republic forces retreat toward Pavonis Mons. The Falcons continue their pursuit, and Valyse reflects on the historical significance of their campaign and Clan Jade Falcon's path toward Terra and the ilClan status.
