The Honor of the Regiment is a short story by Loren L. Coleman that was published as introductory fiction for Field Manual: Draconis Combine.

Plot Summary[edit]

The story is told from the perspective of Chu-i Rhesu Tanaga, a lance commander of the Ryuken-go during the Clan Invasion era. The Ryuken-go are deployed to defend a Combine world against a raid by Clan Smoke Jaguar forces. Only moments after the battle started, the Smoke Jaguars crippled the BattleMech of the Ryuken's commanding officer, Tai-sa Otomassa, and took him prisoner. The honor of the regiment at risk, the executive officer, Chu-sa Stephen Lee, sprang into action and led Second Battalion against the Smoke Jaguar flank in order to rescue the commander. While this maneuver succeeded and the Tai-sa was rescued, it also exposed the Ryuken's battle line. Thus, Tanaga's lance attempts to stop the Smoke Jaguars' counterattack, allowing the rest of First Company to cover the Second Battalion's retreat. At first they succeed in beating back a OmniMech Star, destroying a Vulture and a Black Hawk in the process, before a second Star with heavy 'Mechs arrives as reinforcement. With no chance of holding out against the superior force that threatens the entire regiment, Tanaga asks for permission to sacrifice himself in order to slow down the enemy forces. After receiving permission, he faces the Smoke Jaguars alone, challenging them to a duel to buy time.
