The Will of the State is a short story by Loren L. Coleman that was published as introductory fiction for Field Manual: Capellan Confederation.
Plot Summary[edit]
The story is told from the perspective of Ying-zhang Fah Li Shei, the commander of Warrior House Dai Da Chi's first 'Mech batallion, who is engaged in a battle with forces of the St. Ives Compact on the eve of the final truce of the Capellan-St. Ives War. Even though the truce is coming into effect and the fighting stops, she has got orders from Sun-Tzu Liao to punish the St. Ives forces one last time to show them the superiority of the Capellan Confederation. When the St. Ives forces withdraw and run into a prepared Capellan minefield they reopen fire on Warrior House Dai Da Chi, giving Li Shei the pretext she needs to resume the fight with impunity and carry out Sun-Tzu Liao's orders.
