The sixth child of a minor Lyran noble, as he grew to adulthood Tomas increasingly scorned the notion of patronage and social manipulations and machinations of nobility. Dreaming of adventure and a life of daring deeds, Berglund left the Federated Commonwealth to travel the Inner Sphere before a disastrous visit to Saltillo in the Free Worlds League. Brutally robbed and left near death by local criminals, Berglund only survived thanks to the chance intervention of a passing ComStar technician from the local HPG compound. Left with a ten-centimeter scar running from his right ear to his nose as a clear reminder of his misadventure, during his recovery Tomas ultimately chose to dedicate himself to ComStar.[1]
Tomas Berglund's family background and natural talent led him to become a MechWarrior in the Com Guards[1] and assignment to the 394th Division (The White Lions) and the Alpha Fire II in the Manyfold Paths-III as an veteran-rated Acolyte.[3] Berglund fought alongside the rest of his Division against Clan Jade Falcon during the Battle of Tukayyid, engaging in the "Strike and Hiss" tactics ordered by Precentor Anna Gesicki. Becoming an elite and seasoned MechWarrior, Tomas Berglund survived the brutal fighting on Tukayyid, reaching the rank of Adept as he continued to serve in the 394th's Manyfold Paths as of 3059.[2]

While a MechWarrior, Tomas Berglund's intuitive grasp of three-dimensional space made a him highly adept combatant against aerospace fighters,[1] being assigned a RFL-3N Rifleman which he would use during the fighting on Tukayyid.[3] By 3059 the elite-rated Berglund had received a newly developed HEL-3D Helios, fresh from the St. Ives Compact.[2]
