The Twenty-ninth CAAN Marine Regiment was a part of the Star League Defense Force Regular Army. Originally, the unit was one of the SLDF's Royal units, which consisted of troops from the Terran Hegemony, but had lost its Royal status and started admitting non-Hegemony personnel into its ranks sometime in the first half of the twenty-eighth century.[See Notes]
History[edit]
The Twenty-ninth Royal CAAN Marine Regiment won the Best Regiment category of the SLDF Martial Olympiad twice in a row, in 2696 and 2700 during the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Olympiads held on Mars.[2][3]
In 2762–2763, small groups of the (now non-Royal) Twenty-ninth CAAN Marine Regiment operated undercover in the Rim Worlds Republic to become better familiar with the customs and culture. The commanding officer of the II Corps believed the SLDF's next big military action would be with the Republic and wanted good troops to be ready to do the dirty work when needed.[4]
In 2764, the unit was assigned, as a part of II Corps, Twelfth Army, to District 2 of the Lyran Commonwealth Military Region but was moved to an undisclosed area of the Periphery.[5] The Twenty-ninth joined the rebels during the Periphery Uprising,[5] siding with the Magistracy of Canopus in 2766; the Twenty-ninth survived the Uprising, and in 2785 the regiment was disbanded and used to reactivate the First and Second Canopian Light Horse.[1]

Notes[edit]
^ While it's not expressly stated that the Twenty-ninth Royal CAAN and (non-Royal) Twenty-ninth CAAN are the same unit, there is precedent for other SLDF units losing their Royal status. For example, Field Manual: SLDF page 144 states that the Sixteenth Light Horse Regiment was once a Royal unit but later dropped the "Royal" term from the name when it became a standard one. This implies the term is an honorific designation that does not reflect the organizational structure or core identity of the unit. Furthermore, there is no other precedent for two SLDF units concurrently sharing the same name but with one being Royal and the other not.
