Welcome[edit]

Welcome, Anonymous ONI agent, to BattleTechWiki!

We look forward to your contributions and want to help you get off to a good strong start. Hopefully you will soon join the army of BattleTech Editors! If you need help formatting the pages, visit the manual of style. For general questions go to the Help section or the FAQ. If you can't find your answer there, please ask an Admin.

Additional tips
Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the wiki:

  • For policies and guidelines, see The Five Core Policies of BattleTechWiki and the BTW Policies. Another good place to check out is our market of Projects, to see how the smaller communities within BTW do things in their particular niche areas.
  • Each and every page (articles, policies, projects, images, etc.) has its very own discussion/talk page, found on the tab line at the top of the page. This is a great place to find out what the community is discussing along that subject and what previous issues have already been solved.
  • If you want to play around with your new wiki skills, the Sandbox is for you. Don't worry: you won't break anything. A great resource for printing out is the Wiki Cheat Sheet.
  • If you're not registered, then please consider doing so. At the very least, you'll have a UserPage that you own, rather than sharing one with the community.
  • Also consider writing something about yourself on your UserPage (marked as "Anonymous ONI agent" at the top of the page, though only do this if you're registered). You'll go from being a 'redshirt' to a 'blueshirt,' with the respect of a more permanent member.
    • This is really helpful for the admins, as it gives your account that touch of "humanity" that assists us in our never-ending battle with spambots.
  • For your first few edits on the wiki, please do not add any URLs (which can be an indicator of SPAM).
  • Consider introducing yourself on our Discord server.
  • In your Preferences, under the edit tab, consider checking Add pages I create to my watchlist and Add pages I edit to my watchlist, so that you can see how your efforts have affected the community. Check back on following visits by clicking on watchlist.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random button in the sidebar, or check out the List of Wanted Pages. Or even go to Special Pages to see what weird stuff is actually tracked by this wiki.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the circled button in this image; this will automatically produce your name (or IP address, if you are editing anonymously) and the date.

Again, welcome to Sarna's BattleTechWiki!

Your First Award[edit]

Hey! I know I haven't been chatting as much about it on Discord, because Coding is not my forte on here. But I really like what you have done with the infobox, it looks like you are definitely on the right track!

I hereby present you with your first Award on this wiki:
All Purpose Award, 1st ribbon
The "All Purpose Award", which any Editor may give to any other for any stated reason. You can find the Awards Display code in BattleTechWiki:Awards. Keep up the good work!

Properties[edit]

Hey Anonymous ONI agent,

I have just seen you working on the Properties, now I am not entierly sure what they do as the only explanation I have been given was in the form of a link that was essentially written for somebody who writes code. BUT as far as I know the properties are something to do with automating the info boxes. That being the case... Property:BV 1.0, Property:BV 2.0 and possibly Property:Current Rules are things that I am going to push back on hard. BV 1 and 2 are better served by the MUL and Current Rules is something that can change over time.

So before I jump on things and kill them, what is your thinking on the use of Current rules?--Dmon (talk) 03:55, 13 March 2022 (EDT)

As for Property:Current Rules, if I'm being honest, I didn't even think about how it would have to be periodically updated to remain accurate. With that in mind, I definitely agree that it'd probably be more trouble than it's worth.
As for the BV properties, I was going to argue in favor of these initially, but after thinking about it, I can again see where you are coming from as we would either need to find a way to assign it to every single variant of every single unit which would be a huge pain, or be forced to settle for only using it on the main variants, which would be kinda pointless.
You can go ahead and nuke those. »Anonymous ONI agent« [COMMS] [SERVICE RECORD] 05:30, 13 March 2022 (EDT)
Will do! --Dmon (talk) 08:32, 13 March 2022 (EDT)

Titles and Positions box[edit]

Hey Anonymous ONI agent,

I saw that you where messing with the Titles and Positions box in the Theodore Kurita (31st c.), so I thought I would give you a heads up... Those kind of in article boxes are going away in favour of the title articles linked via the infobox. As such it might not be worth putting too much effort into that perticular box. I installed most of them a good 4-5 years ago before I realised that a dedicated title article works better.--Dmon (talk) 20:19, 17 March 2022 (EDT)

And looking closer it looks like you have already created First Lord, Chancellor and a bunch of others.... I am deffo catching you later than I would of liked. Have you seen how many titles we have? 535 identified titles and I am still fairly early days on the positions at 209!--Dmon (talk) 20:34, 17 March 2022 (EDT)
Ah, gotcha. Well, I can just move the properties into the character infoboxes then. Anyways, my plan wasn't to create properties for literally every title, but just the major ones like heads of state for the major factions and maybe Clan Khans. Alternatively we could just have properties for titles in general rather than a specific set for each individual title, but that could get messy with characters who hold/have held multiple titles, of which there are many.
Anyways, I think I need some more feedback from others here to give some direction to what I'm doing. I'm honored to be trusted with helping in such a big way as such a new editor, but I also feel like I've been given a task and a set of guidelines that are asking for me to be the one to take charge and push to get things done when I don't have enough knowledge about the state of things around here or what exactly is even actually needed in the first place. If I'm supposed to be waiting for something, I don't even know who or what I'm supposed to be waiting for.
Obviously none of this is your fault, and to be fair Deadfire did try to start a voice chat last weekend but I had other things going on. And of course I get that others have lives outside the wiki and other responsibilities in keeping this place up and running and that it's not anyone's job to keep track of me, and I wouldn't want to be micromanaged anyway. But a bit more direction and guidance from others would be appreciated, because I definitely feel like I'm a bit lost at present.
